Title: SS Newell Sleeves
Post by: Cortez_Conversions on February 25, 2015, 03:28:36 AM
I think now is as good a time as any to ask what the desire on these sleeves would be. I'm not going to ask for cash up front, nor hound anyone. I just need to know approx. how many of these will sell. This project along with a couple others is going to have me shelling out a pile of cash.
The sleeves are to be made from 416 stainless, and be heat treated to about 42c rockwell. I'm not sure if the finish will be shiny, off color, or darkened by the heat treating. They are a direct replacement for the stock gear sleeve on all the 600 series reels.
I'm on the fence about cutting the flats all the way down to the ratchet, maybe you all can decide that for me? Newell Nut can confirm, I think there is an extra tooth on the ratchet too. The ticket price is going to be around $35 each, depending on volume.
So let me know what you all think!

Tom,
I want two of them in the 600 series.  As to cutting flat sections, I am going to leave that up to Dwight and some of the more experienced reel builders.  I have a SS crank from Alan Tani.  How about the 500 series?  I think there are more 500 series Newell's out there fishing then the 600 series.  If you go in that direction, I would buy three in the 500 series.

Since I have tested Sal's Delrin idea successfully with a multi stack thin disc drag system I like the smoothness and have power to spare on the drag, so cutting the flats down to the sprocket is not necessary in my opinion. I am good for 6 for the 600s and 6 for the 500 series. I have a sample of a 500 if you need it for a pattern. The length and location of the shoulder for the handle washer is the only difference on the 500 series.

Hi Tom:

At that price (or thereabouts), I'd take one 600 series and one 500 series.

Thanks.

Hi Tom,

If we can make them for the 200/300/400 series, I may be in for a hundred to start with the flats extending all the way down to I could add a full undergear carbon fiber or Delrin (Acetel) washer...depending on price.  This will bring the Blackie and P-series drag system back.

For the 500 and 600 series, I'm not sure on the quantity.  I would like the flats to go all the way down as well so there is an option for a full undergear carbon fiber or Delrin (Acetel) washer.

One concern is that Newells produce two different types of dogs, and we may need to provide optional dogs with the gear sleeve to ensure that the new gear sleeve can be used on all reels.

Thanks.
Bryan

The older 2,3 and 400 sleeves had 8 teeth and the hole at the bottom was chamfered to fit the tapered piece at the bottom of the shaft. The newer ones did not have the chamfer but did have 10 teeth which helps take up slack. Making the new production to fit just means the bottom should be chamfered on the ID and use 10 teeth. I would take a few of those too.

Thanks everyone for the input.
It look like an even split between the 600's and the 500's I didn't know I was making.
Dwight--If you can send me the 500 sleeve, I'll take a look at it. PM me if you need my address.
Bryan-- I'll have to put the smaller sleeves on the back burner for a bit, but keep shooting me PM's, we'll get it done.

My pretty sleeves arrived today and wow what nice work. Now when the stars get aligned right we will see some beautiful 300 series sleeve with chamfered bottom to fit all series and 10 teeth. If we bug Tom enough about these things it will happen. He has my pattern parts.

Thanks for a great job Tom.

I put a new sleeve in my old reliable 540 3.2 today and it was a perfect fit and double dogs snap into place on Tom's tooth design perfectly with a very sharp click. Fully assembled it operates like a dream reel. Very smooth and very strong.
If you did not order one you are missing a wonderful opportunity for perfection.

Just curious, why did you start with 600's and 500's? The market for 200/300/400 has to be many times larger than for 500/600's.

Tom: You know I'm good for some 2/3/4 ss sleeves also...if they'll fit on the original Blackie/P series. If it also fits post P series (or you make a second sleeve), that would be a plus for everyone who has later models. :) ;) ;D

I made the 500/600 first because there was not anything else out there. At the time we were discussing this, a bunch of SST 200/300/400 series sleeves hit the market.
As it turns out, those sleeves don't fit a lot of the older Newell reels. Am i going to make 200/300/400 sleeves? Probably.

Dwight has a few prototypes to test. The new sleeves will fit all 200/300/400 series reels except the older P series with the 4 stack drag. These are the sleeves with the pressed on flange.
How many of you would be interested in those? Dwight, can you chime in with what we discussed?

Title: Re: SS Newell Sleeves
Post by: Newell Nut on September 01, 2015, 11:42:45 AM
The sleeves are the usually superb machining from Tom for a perfect fit. They will fit all Newells starting with the no letters, G, C, S and late model Ps for 200,300 and 400 series.

They will fit the original P but the recess in the bottom of a 4 stack drag is a slight issue. Solutions are to replace the old recessed gear with a newer model for one. Another idea that I am planning to test since I have found that the delrin under the gear with Bryan's 5 stack is a great set up. What I am going to do is use Tom's sleeve on and old P 4 stack by filing the ears off of a standard drag washer and place this under the recessed gear with a .031 delrin to fit into the recess of the gear.

I will test it today with scales and then test it fishing Thur.

Title: Re: SS Newell Sleeves
Post by: Newell Nut on September 02, 2015, 01:30:33 AM
Got a late start on the test today but tried the sleeve in the old 4 stack arrangement and it worked great until I ramped up to 20 lb of drag and the dog started slipping. Will try to figure that out tomorrow and will test a 3 stack arrangement gear set tomorrow as well.

Update:
I found that the style of the old P dog was designed to fit the old 8 point sprocket and it does not lock into the 10 point sprocket well. Newell later modified the dogs with a sharper point and those dogs fit Tom's 10 point perfectly as well as Keta's dogs that he has made for me.

(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a526/dwebb49/IMG_1020_zpsmujnql97.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/dwebb49/media/IMG_1020_zpsmujnql97.jpg.html)
The dog on the left is from the old P 4 stack and the shape of the end for the old 8 spoke sprocket did not fit well in the new 10 point. I put the newer Newell dog in its place for the new gear sleeve and it worked perfect. I used the .031 delrin and left the CF in the gear recess and after assembly I made several runs on the drag set a 20 lb and no issues. No problem with the sleeve but only with the old P style dog. The one pictured on the right was made by Keta and it also locks into the new sleeve nicely.

The 200/300/400 series sleeves are at the heat treater! I should have them back early next week.
So here's what we came up with: these will fit all 200/300/400 Newell reels out there except for the 4 stack P series. They have the counter bore and chamfer for the early series.
I also ran a bunch of dogs out of 17-4 H900 hardened stainless steel. I would suggest changing out any P or G dogs you have that have the sharp corner on one side.
The sleeves are $29 shipping included. The dogs are $5.50 each, also free shipping.
I will post pics next week when they are all done.

Hello All,

Newell Nut just sent me a message:

"I had problem today installing one of the new sleeves. It would not go on the bridge due to small ID. Tried all 6 and failed. Then tested on two spare bridges and no problem. Just a heads up.

For this one reel I used a 22 cal bore brush with steel wool and JBs Bore shine. Chucked it in the drill and polished for a couple minutes and the sleeve fit okay. Odd Bridge post I guess."

If anyone else has any issues, please let me know.

Thanks!

This was an old G series but the sleeves fit other Gs just fine. I doubt if I polished more than a half a thousandth. I could push the sleeve on before doing the polishing but it was just too tight and would freeze up if it got hot.

His Tom,
There were a number of people looking for gear sleeves on the Newell Facebook page.  I kept referring them here.  Several said they looked for you on eBay....

Jim
Yeah, I let all my listings expire on Ebay. I'd rather sell gear here cheaper and without the fees. So please keep sending them this way!
Thanks,
Tom

Are the ss gear sleeves still available for the 200-300 G-series?

If so, is there a modified version that will work in the older P-series?

The easiest thing to do would be to replace the gears with a newer model.
Barring that, Newell Nut mentioned cutting a delrin spacer to replace the under gear washer. You will have to replace the dog(s) as well to the newer style.
I have them available, but not listed on the web site, so just holler if you want them.

I've got the Cortez SS Sleeve and Bryan Young's drag upgrade in my 338 and the Cortez SS Sleeve in my 533. The 338 hasn't been fished yet, but the 533 has been fished yo-yo and dropper loop several times, got a few yellows, and the reel feels great.

I've been thinking thinking about upgrading the drag in the 533 next, mainly to make it easier to set the drag and get smoother drag, and maybe upgrading the drags in my 220, 229, and 332 as well, because well, you can never have too much drag, right?. And I was wondering, do the Newell brass gear sleeves actually have the same problem as the Penns, that is, rounding off the brass gear sleeve at higher drag settings? Or, is the sleeve upgrade mainly for corrosion resistance? [The Newell sleeve design is a little different than the Penn, and I never really thought about that when upgrading the 338 and 533 gear sleeves. I just wanted them! :)]

The Newell OEM gear sleeve is hardened bronze and no issues really. The SS sleeves were made to give us a 10 tooth capability in all the newells (early versions had 8) and the best part is Tom's machining is very sweet and better than factory originals.
