Title: handle upgrades - please read this first
Post by: alantani on December 19, 2008, 07:39:37 PM
the fish's interface with the reel is the drag system.  once you upgrade your drag washers to greased carbon fiber, the fish will probably not be able to tell the difference between your $90 ambassaduer and your $350 calcutta.  your interface with the reel is the handle grip.  in between the handle grip and the drags is a reel with single or two speeds, leverdrag or star drag, graphite or aluminum frame, level wind or no.  once you're on a fish, your reel may as well be a black box.  it's you on the handle grip and the fish against the drag.

personally, i've found most fishing reel handle grips to be to small.  that's why i had pete kolekar make the bigger ones for me.  the materials he chose were stainless steel and delron.  the grip is turned on a lathe, starting with barstock.  the stainless is tubing, screws and more barstock turned on a lathe.  these handle grips have a very comfortable 9 degree offset.  they are not fancy, but they are very tough and come in three sizes.  first, there is a smaller tapered grip that i call a 2/0 kolekar.  i personally put them on the loaner reels that i use for inshore rockcod fishing.  alot of guys really like them on smaller reels.  then there is a full sized handle grip that i call a 4/0 kolekar.  i have these grips installed on my progear 501's and my accurate boss reels, from the itty bitty 197 to the 650.  the last grip is the newer tapered magnum that i call a 6/0 kolekar.  i put these on my accurate atd's.  i like these grips on any size reel from a penn senator 113h to an 80 international.  the trick is to match the grip with the size of your reel AND the size of your hand.

on many reels, the length of the handle arm is fine, it's just the grip that is too small.  all you need to do is remove the handle, drill out the rivet holding the grip, bolt on a new grip and you're all set.  alternatively, you can send me the old handle and i can mount it for you.  the 2/0 is $26, the 4/0 is $30, and the 6/0 is $36, all with domestic shipping included.  send a check to alan tani, 12362 ted court, saratoga, ca 95070 and i'll ship out the handle out.      thanks!  alan

QuoteWhat keeps the threaded screw from coming loose? They look like a nice upgrade. I may have to try a couple.

yeah, i was mulling that one over for quite a while.  the guy that makes them for me wanted to use loctite on them, and may have actually done so on the early models.

my take is this - corrosion anywhere is bad.  that means using grease on screw threads to prevent corrosion.  that also means that they might back out.  i personally assemble all of the handles now.  i torque them down as hard as possibly can, AFTER adding yamaha blue greease to the screw holes.  i need all of you to get back to me if there is a problem or screw up.  if you don't, i will never know if there is a problem.

Hi Alan, Just out of curiosity, what are the dimensions of the 2/0, 4/0 as compared to the 6/0? Are all the same diameter, just shorter?   Also, was thinking of replacing some older Penn International handles. Seems, these may be a press fit. I could drill these out, but my concern is that the hole diameter may be a bit larger than the bolt that came with the 6/0s I recently purchased from you. Or maybe I should be asking is.....are all the handle upgrades you sell the same or are they different as to what make/model of reel I want to upgrade.  Thanks, Ron.

hi, ron!  the 2/0 is 1-1/8th x 3-1/4th, the 4/0 is 1-1/8th x 3-3/4ths and the 6/0 is 1-1/4th x 4-1/4th.  on some of the handle arms, the hole that is left is a little larger than the diameter of the 10-32 machine screw.  i've found it not to be a problem.  even though it is not a tight fit, it the handle stays in place if you tighten down on the screw enough.  alan

now we're going to drill out the old handle grip and bolt on a new kolekar grip.  this dot on the rivet will help.

use a 3/16ths inch drill bit to drill out the rivet.

compare the old grip to the new one.

use a 1/8th inch hex drive for this 10-32 hex socket cap screw.

changing out the handle grip is a very important part of this upgrade.

the new kolekar spinning reel grip (right) has a 0.375 inch diameter spindle instead the 0.5 inch spindle found on the 2/0 (left), the 4/0 and the 6/0 kolekar grips.  that way you can bolt this spinning reel grip onto a skinnier handle arm.

the older 2/0 kolekar grip (left) is 3.25 inches tall and 1.25 inches in diameter.  the 4/0 kolekar grip (center) is 3.75 inches tall and 1.25 inches in diameter.  the new spinner (right) is 3.5 inches tall and 1 inch in diameter.

ok, they are ready to go.  they are the same price as the 2/0 kolekar grip, $26 with shipping included.  thanks!  alan

they may seem to large at first, but i've started using the 6/0 grips on all my long range reels.  they worked great on this last trip on the intrepid.

Would any of the handle's work on a 9/0 or a 12/0 or are there some in the works for that?

:)

i'd put a 6/0 grip on those reels and use the same arm.  it will work great!

How about a small greased set screw tightened on the screw thread? It would mean drilling and tapping the shaft but it works well on other applications.

i have a small stainless steel arm for these reels.  most guys have been matching it up with a 2/0 kolekar grip.  photos to follow.

Alan,

How do your smallest handles 2/0 size compare to the old style tiburon lite handles? I have those on most of my reels and really like them. The problem with the tiburon ones is they have redesigned them and I don't care for the new ones. I picked up another progear 545 last year and would like to change out the handle on it. Please let me know. Thanks, Mike

they are slightly larger in diameter and a little shorter in over all length. the kids like them alot!

Hi Alan,

Looking to upgrade my Penn narrow 505hs with your stainless gear sleeve and handle kit. My question, will I need to change the arm & handle and if so, do you have an arm that will accommodate the change? I will send you a check after receiving your reply.

Thanks,
Les Yee

thanks, les.  the gear sleeve is easy.  send a pm with your address and i'll send it out.  when it arrives, send a check.  the handle is another issue.  i have the 2/0 kolekars that are great, but you have to do some drilling.  i also have the penn jigmaster power handle.  the price is currently $20.  i bought a bunch at the old price of $15 and i'm still selling them at that price.  alan

Alan: Question regarding the penn power handle in your inventory, does it look like the 24-12LT, 24N-310, or the 24-55.

Hey Alan... I really like the design of these handles. Do you have the tapered ones just a slight bit smaller than the 6/0? I am looking for two. One for my Tekota 800 and one for my Penn113h Jvariance conversion.

The handles that are slightly smaller in diameter are the spinner handles, but no taper.  I use them on jigmaster sized reels and spinner larger than 4500s.

So you would recomend the 6/0? I am worried they may be just a little too big.

either the 4/0 or 6/0 would work fine.  in part it depends on the size of the fish you are chasing.

I have 2 of those reel colors handles on my 114hlw's.  I like the idea, but it doesn't feel comfortable at all in my wrist. Also, the cushioning on the handle is HUGE!... and I'm 6'5" with an XL glove.  Tom must be making these things for basketball players with broken wrists  ;D
PS- they ain't cheap either,

I have 2 question a bit off topic but related:
1- is the handle arm on senators 0/4,0/6 & 0/9 of the same length and are they interchangeable?
2-For targetting big  bottom fish like groupers(up to 60 lb) I was considering using a senator 0/6 with locked down drag due to the 2:1 gear ratio, if a longer handle arm is used, I belive this will provide more torque, is this worth trying? where can I find them?
3- How much lifting power can the above reel lift without using the rod, I rememeber someone in this forum doing teh same test fro an Okuma MAkaira 10, can teh senator beat the power of Makaira?

Thanks
Inspiro
Title: Re: handle upgrades - please read this first
Post by: alantani on December 29, 2011, 08:50:11 AM
the drag ranges of the makaira 10 and the penn senator 114 are probably very close, but the makaira will be much easier to crank in low gear.  the difference between the makaira and the senator is probably the same as the difference between 60 pound spectra and 60 pound mono!  a 60 pound grouper would have a better chance against mono because of the stretch.  a 6/0 grip with a stock penn arm should be fine.

Alan, I have a Okuma EB-50 reel and need to replace the handle ball as it's too small to exert the kind of force I need to deal with the Bluefish here in the East Coast. Which size would I need and could you give me some idea of what the turn around time would be?

I live in PA.

the spinner handle grip would work better here because the spindle is a narrow diameter.  send me a pm with your address and i willl mail it right out. when it arrives, send a check.  alternatively, send me the handle and i can drill it out for you.  may as well include a check at that time.  drilling takes 2 minutes.

I wonder why Okuma doesn't recognize this short coming with their EB series baitrunner. Would make their product that much better with a true SW larger knob on the handle.

I have 2 Daiwa SLX50SHA and 1 Grandwave Z 50 that I would like to to pt 4/0 grips on. I don't believe they will fit on the current handles. Do you have an option for a full handle replacement that will fit these or would the Spinning reel grips fit? I have one of the 6/0 grips that I put on a 900H that works great.

the spindle for the spinner has a smaller diameter.  honestly, for these larger reels, i would still use the 4/0 grip.  it will overhang a little, but i think you will hardly notice it.  the spindle for the 4/0 is the same size as the 6/0 that you already have.  either one will be an improvement, though.   your choice!

What drill bit should i use to install my 6/0 kolekar handle? The screw keeps backing out as i reel the line in. The lip on the handle is exposed so im thinking i need to make the hole larger so the lip before the screw area fits into the hole in the reel crank handle.

3/16ths inch for the small ones and 5/16ths inch for counterbored spindles.

Guys and gals, HELP ME!

Atempting to drill out old grips and replace with Kolekar grips. Man, I'm having a heck of a time doing this. My Harbor Freight drill bits do very little against some of this steel (my good bits are somewhere in storage w/the rest of my shop tools). My Dremel tool is doing most of the "heavy lifting/grinding".  Currently Im trying to drill out the grip handle on my Avet SX and Im getting no-where-fast. im using a hand drill (drill press in storage) which was doing the job until I ran into this Avet. I believe the problem lies with these HF drill bits, so off to the hardware store to get a good bit, what type of bit should I get to drill out these grips from the handles?

Desperate,

Leo

Hi Leo,

I use the narrow step bit.  Seems to work well.  I also spray lubricant, like WD-40 while drilling

Bryan,

Update: your suggestions worked like a charm. Will use the steped drill bits from now on, the cut on the bits seem to remove material more effeciently than my regular bits. Now my issue is the length of the screw for the Kolekar grips seems a bit too short only a couple of threads to screw into the handle due to the extra material Avet has on the grip end of the handle.  So I'll have to find a longer screw or grind the extra material flat with the rest of the handle so I have more threads to screw into the grip.  Also of thinking of shiming the hole to support/stabalize the screw with some type of small diameter tubing from the hardware store.  Im thinknig copper tubing will be more available but dont know if it will hold up to sleeve the grip screw, any suggestions guys? Does Alan have longer screws for these instances where one is needed?  Lastly, Alan has greased the screw hole and Im thinking of applying semi-permanent thread locker such as blue Locktite to secure the screw to the handle. To add thread locker I'll need to remove the grease and Im concerned about corrosion if I do that, any suggestions to my questions?

Thanx again,

Leo

Post by: Bryan Young on October 11, 2013, 04:39:46 AM
Glad it worked out Leo,

Alan does have some longer screws.  Unfortunately, Alan has new inventor of the handles, gear sleeves, and tiburon frames and I cannot find anything at the moment.  It may be possible for you to find another SS screw from Ace Hardware.  They seem to have a bunch of SS screws that other places doesn't have.

Regarding the loctite.  I just added a drop on my screws.  Loctite chemically reacts with the metal, so when metal to metal contact occurs due to the stretching of the screw, the loctite bonds even with grease.

This thread seems a bit stale so I hope I am not posting in the wrong place.  If so, let me know.

I have a kolekar handle that seized up on me on a trip yesterday.  I had been enjoying it on a baja special for several years without incident and rinsing and lubing it after each trip along with the reel, but perhaps I should have been doing more.

It was not squeaking or giving any other indication of a problem, so I am not sure what happened, but even after removing the screw at each end it will not come loose, so I am unsure how to get it apart.  Any hints?
Title: Re: handle upgrades - please read this first
Post by: alantani on June 12, 2019, 11:20:14 PM
yeah, it's 304 stainless against 308 stainless, so that will happen over time.  i lube them when i put them together, but it (obviously) will not last forever.  on the grip side you will see an hex head machine screw.  it a right handed screw, so it comes out counterclockwise.  i use a different machine screw now.  the socket is larger so you can really crank down on them.  send a pm with your address and i can mail you the new screws.  worst case, send me the handle grip and i can crack it apart, clean it up and relube it for you.

Just for closure - I managed to get it apart and it looks like something got into the mechanism.  You can see two places where it dug into the shaft and where it scraped up as I separated them.  There was still lubricant on it, albeit a bit gray.

I am not sure how that can happen with the washer and screw on the knob side and the tight tolerances on the other end. I am going to buff/polish and put it back together, with a generous amount of marine grease.

I took apart my other three, which all came apart easily, looked fine, and were still lubed, but I cleaned and regreased them anyway.  I will add it to my yearly maintenance.

Maybe a  little defect with the material.
I have a few of your knobs and as I mentioned earlier those are the best shafts I've seen in a while.
Having one as such out of the many you've offered, I call that good.

With that said, I think Wolvie  deserves a new shaft 🙂

Alan,
If I wanted to hotrod a Penn 210 and a 309 with badass handles, would you recommend i replace the arms as well or just the handles ?

Do you recommend the 6/0's for these type reels ?

I am looking for a direct fit long arm handle replacement for a Talica 20.

I mostly use this reel for long range wahoo fishing in the stock configuration, BUT I would love to get a longer arm with knob that will quickly interchange as needed to turn the reel into a backup big tuna reel.  One reel, two different length handles, and two uses.

Previously I have caught large YFT in the stock configuration, and afterwards had Cal modify it with lower gears- but I did not like it.

I want to keep my reel stock with a second easily changed out longer handle.  Is there one available?

Thanks!

Sorry,  gentlemen,  but no. The 3/0 grip is midway in size between the 2/0 and the 4/0. The inventory carrying costs were a bit much.

Alan, I'm new to the Tuna game up here in the NE. I plan on buying a TLD30IIA and I've read the handles aren't comfortable at all. What would you recommend as a replacement?

I put Alan's 5/0 on all my Internationals 20-50's. It's the way to go.
