Title: P220 F eating line
Post by: Classtime on July 01, 2016, 01:29:58 PM
After all these years, I finally got a Newell and it is a P220 F. It spins like crazy. But...when I took it to the jetty, it ate line on one side no matter what. Mad at myself for not checking the gap before I made the trade, I went home and got out the nail polish. Before disassembling, I poked the 20 pound mono around and it fit easily on the right side at the bottom of the spool near the base plate. If I layered enough nail polish to close the gap at the bottom, I wouldn't have enough clearance at the top. I saw a recommendation on here regarding a 332 to realign the frame. Could it be as simple as loosening the side plates and retightening? Is there any thing else to consider before I get started?

you may need to shim the spool bearings to shift the spool over.  By shimming the spool bearings, I am referring to placing a shim between the spool bearing and the bearing cup to move the spool to the right or left.  Shim the right spool bearing will shift the spool to the left and shimming the left spool bearing will shift the spool to the right.  It may also be that you will need to remove shims in the bearing cups as well.

It's more than likely an alignment problem.  If the frame is not square you can usually see there's more exposure of the rim of the spool at the bottom, and less on the top. At the factory they had a fixture to align the cage assembly before the side plates were attached.

You can try pulling the side plates off then loosen all screws, and if you have any extra, short assembly screws run them into all threaded holes. Then slowly tighten all the screws, and then remove the additional short screws that will be filled with screws thru the side plates and ss rings.

This may square the frame up.

I have additional inside cage rings, but there is little deviation from one to another.

Ooo sounds like you have a tough problem. It's hard to believe there's that much gap as Carl built his reels to such tight tolerances. First off is it side to side gap or top to bottom? Since you don't know the history of the reel someone could have modified the ring to create that gap. Original p or second generation p ? If you can post a picture and/or better description of your problem I'm sure you'll get a lot more probable solutions.

I took the side plates off, loosened the rings and tightened slowly and it didn't improve things. It is worst at the bottom.  I noticed that the spool is not centered left to right and seems to be off by nearly a 1/16. Here are some pics.

And that is adjusted with no play.

What Bryan said^ looks like you might be missing a spacer ring on the right bearing cup. That's that plastic ring that looks like it's broken/split. Different colors are different thickness you'll have to experiment to find the right one. I think mine are white on p220f. Sometimes you can substitute an o ring to get the desired spacing. Looks like an original p four stack, nice reel. Spool just needs to be shifted to the right a little.

If it is not the spacer ring then there may be a shim washer under the bearing on the handle side. Hope it is that simple for you. Most of the time the shim washers are under the left side bearing.

Thanks Hamachi. That will help tons. My spacer is orange. If I can space it one thread width further, I should be good. Pete probably has a thicker one.

Orange might be the right one for your reel. They are determined at the factory. I guess I was getting a little ahead of myself, check under the bearings like Newell Nut said for thin curved shims (spacers). Move those to the left side bearing cup if in the right side cup. This will move the spool to the right. If you save bearing shields, you could use those for shims if the right size is found. Just hammer them flat it works.

Under the right bearing cap was a black flat washer. I took that out and it is improved. 0n the left side, should there be an O ring or a plastic spacer? Mine has what looks and feels like a hardened O ring.

My left side has what appears to be an o ring. Bought it new back in the mid-eighties so, unless someone switched it on me, that's how it came.

I agree with all previous posts that the problem is centering the spool.  That takes some time by placing shims on either side between the spool bearing and the bearing cup.  I have found the best shim to use is from McMaster Carr.  You can then play with adding them on wither side till centering is perfect and you should have a good long free spool.  Good Luck.

The left side bearing cup always has a o-ring just to give tension to hold the adjusted position.

Jeff,

If you want to send it up to me, I'll shim your spool.  Just pay for postage and we'll be good.  Let me know.
