Title: Titanium handle arms
Post by: Three se7ens on July 13, 2016, 03:30:23 AM
Since I have had a few cases of the Sal's handle style handles bending under heavy load, I wanted to offer a heavy duty version of that design.  There just wasn't much I could do with the design to strengthen it without losing the the original design theme.  So instead I went with a stronger material.  In this case, its grade 5 titanium.  Titanium is significantly stronger than the 316 stainless used in my other handles, its completely impervious to salt water corrosion, and is also very springy.  It tends to return to its original shape if it does flex.  Its also light.  Very light.  The stainless version of the 113H handle weighs 32 grams, while the titanium weighs just 18 grams.

But there is a downside.  Titanium is expensive.  So these handles will have to be priced higher than the stainless versions.

The Sal's handle will be $24 each for all of the following fitments:  112H/jigmaster long version, 113H, Newell 200-600, and Penn Baja special/torque 200-300/etc.

The counterbalanced handle will also be available for $34 each for all of the following fitments:  113H, Newell 200-600, and Penn Baja special/torque 200-300/etc.

The long version of the 112H/jigmaster handle is the same length as the 113H handle.  I will consider offering any other sizes and designs if there is a demand for it.  The Baja special is a new fitment, and I will be adding that as an option to all of my current designs.

If youre interested in purchasing any of these, just reply here with what you want.  I have material, but so far Ive only had a few samples cut.

Can you post a photo of the counterbalanced handle?

It will look the same as the #4 handle here. (http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=11661.0)  I dont have any of the titanium ones at the moment to take a picture of, but its that design.  The titanium is a little darker than the stainless after running through the tumblers, but can be hand polished to a high luster.

Here you go guys(and gals).

The blue 113H has Adam's original arm and the silver 113H has the new titanium arm. Both are "Sals" style handle arms and stars from Adam. Knobs from Alan C.

I musta been lucky to get one of Adam's first titanium versions.  :D I doubt I'll be bending the titanium arm, unless I drive my truck over it. ;D

Quick questions, if I may: Will the titanium counterbalanced handles be reasonably easy to polish by hand? Also, will they be compatible with Striper Lou's incredible acrylic knobs (when they become available)?

Thanks!  :)

What is the center to center distance on Sal's handles for the Jig Masters?
Center of handle hole to center of sleeve hole.

Center of handle hole to center of sleeve hole.

The long version of the jigmaster, the 113H, the Baja/torque 200-300, and Newell versions are all 3" center to center for Sal's handles.  The standard jigmaster version in stainless is 2.5" center to center.  I can offer that in titanium as well(if there is interest), but Ill have to get a quote on that before I set a price.

Aiala, the titanium should polish up to a brilliant luster with a similar amount of work as the stainless would require.  I dont know for sure though, so Ill give it a shot this weekend, and let you know.  Ill see what hole size Lou uses for his magnificent acrylic knobs, but I can certainly accommodate it.

Sal, just to be clear, I am NOT offering the offset handles in titanium.  For all practical purposes, it cannot be formed.  It just springs back when you try to bend it.  The Sal's handles and balanced handles are first up.  If there is interest, Ill offer my curved handle, and I have another design Ive been working on that's a possibly candidate as well.

Mostly looks. On the old knucklebusters it was important to balance the weight of the knob, but nowadays I think it's mostly for looks.

It also helps when casting, prevents the handle from spinning during the cast.
It will also help retrieve line with better smoothness while cranking, to me anyway...you'll be the judge with yours.

All of my handles are cut with the knob hold undersize, and I drill it to size after I get an order.  I offer 3 sizes that accommodate most everything on the market:  3/16", 6mm, and 5/16".  I can also do custom sizes as necessary.

Lou's knobs require a 3/16" hole, as do the Pro Challenger knobs sold by Alan C.  Alan Tani uses 3/16" or 5/16" for his Kolekar knobs, and many universal knobs require a 6mm hole.

I have the first batch of titanium arms back from the cutter.  I couldnt fit everything I wanted on the sheet I had, so here are the counts for this batch:

113H balanced handle - 4
112H Sal's handle - 4
Newell Sal's handle - 8

Ill send out invoices in the next day or two.  The 113H Sal's handle will have to wait until I get back from my trip, so it may be towards the end of august before those are ready.

If you only want two, thats ok.  But since none of the 113H versions of Sal's handle were cut from this batch, I will have plenty cut with the next batch for everyone.

Im sending out PM's tonight for the orders I can fill from this batch, which looks like it covers everything but the Sal's handle for the 113H.

All I have left from this batch(after filling the requests in this thread) are a few Sal's handles for Newell reels.

Adam, I personally have a bunch of counterbalanced handles, but I'm in need of the Sal's handles. I know I could easily make some from the counterbalanced ones, but would bother me destroying your masterpiece :).
I will need some for the Jigmasters and 113h, hopefully you'll move up to the larger sizes soon.
I know the 113h are plenty strong, but as stated earlier, I wouldn't mind if the 113h would be of the same thickness as the larger ones.

Take a look at that, and decide what you want.  Send me a PM with the following info and your email address, and I will send you an invoice through paypal.

drag stars - style, size and thickness, and what reel its for
handles - stainless or titanium, style, what reel its for, and hole size for the knob.

I currently only offer the Sal's handle and Balanced handle in titanium.  Everything else is marine grade 316 stainless.

Here are the 3 sizes of the "Sal's handles" in titanium.  The Jigmaster and 113H versions are the same length are 1/8" thick.  The 114H/115 and 116+ versions are both 0.160" thick, and the 116+ version is a bit bigger than the 114H/115 version.  In the picture below, Im showing a 113H on the left, 114H/115 in the middle, and 116+ on the right.

All are made from 6al-4v titanium.  It has 3 times the yield strength, and 5 times the bending resistance of 316 stainless.  It is very springy, and tends to return to its shape well when bent.  All in all, its a very tough and resiliant material, and is completely impervious to saltwater corrosion.

Pricing on the Sal's handles are as follows:
Jigmaster - $24
113H - $24
114H/115 - $27
116+ - $29

The Sal's handle will be $24 each for all of the following fitments:  112H/jigmaster long version, 113H, Newell 200-600, and Penn Baja special/torque 200-300/etc.

Adam, since you are making handles for the Baja Special, how hard would be to made a handle for the fathom 40LD/ torque 40LD reels on Sal's design Ti?

I have a nice AT knob and debating on looking for a handle blank for the fathom 40LD2 or just take the stock knob out and put the AT knob, I would like to get a handle blank and keep the stock handle as spare

the site is not up. if you want to order parts, send Adam a message, and he will reply. he does not stock everything he makes at all times, and you may have to wait for some items, but they are top quality and worth the wait. i myself would like some more of his drag stars, especially the titanium ones.
