Title: New style shift lever
Post by: Maxed Out on January 05, 2017, 01:50:47 AM
This project was such a no brainer it is beyond silly. We are still using a shift lever designed in the 1930's by Otto Henze, the founder of Penn reels. Fast forward 85 years and it's time for something new....

....the all new "tank top" shift levers are 100% CNC machined from a solid piece of 6061 aluminum. The first version is a bit too proud and will not work with offset handle arms.

A 2nd batch will be ready within 2-3 weeks that will not stick out as far and will allow for offset arms.

First batch of 100 went like wildfire on simply word of mouth. The few I have remaining will be held off for those who buy a kit. Fear not, more are on the way very soon in all colors of the Tom H rainbow.  :D

Also been tinkering with colored O-rings, and all future shift levers will come with a set of black O-rings. These shifters will be offered at $20 each, and there will be a small discount on orders of 3 or more. I've sent some out to the Ohana for feedback and I'm sure we will soon hear from them.

These levers are available @ Mysticparts.com, and also at CortezConversions.com

Will one of these levers fit on a Cortez Conversion side plate for a 113H. I put one together recently and would love a black lever to put on the reel.

Yes, any reel with a 113 eccentric. Reels pictured above with new lever are Cortez 4/0's (113H)

Jigmasters, and senators up to 4/0. If you have offset handle arm you'll need to wait a couple weeks for the next batch. This first batch is for flat handle arms.

These levers also fit many pro gear reels. Here are just a few. 251, 255, 2000, 2500, 545, 541, 454, 440, 3000 & 3500

....also KC Lee Pro, and several others.

Aiala, you know if I had a pink one it would already be on the way. I am currently out of levers, but will have more in about 3 weeks......in the colors already posted.

I seem to recall a stunning green Lee Pro Jigmaster that resides in Palm Springs. How bout a green shifter for it ??

Ted,
Thank you so much for getting your awesome new shift levers to me this week. Just when I was certain the rasta jigmaster (which you already generously donated a mint gold accuframe to)...these things come along and change the game all over again. They look amazing being color matched the the cortez plates and the o-rings are a perfect touch. They also feel great in hand and to operate, perfect weighted feel to them as the eccentric cam snaps them back and forth.

I am temporarily out of stock. The first batch of 100 went on mostly word of mouth.

I do have another larger batch coming and will be ready for sale by end of January(about 3 weeks)

These levers fit several Penns, including jigmaster, and all small senators up to 4/0.

If your request is posted on this thread, rest assured you'll get a PM from me as soon as the next batch is in my hands.

   Thanks -Ted

I recognize that reel and the carnage ulua rod Matt! The koa Brock Fee knob probably is a good idea if you're using it in cold weather. There's a few other SS and aluminum upgrades on this site u could throw money at if you wanted to, besides Ted's new shift levers.

Just gave 2 thumbs up on updated design change from Chris (My machinist) which will allow more room for offset handle arms. Same basic design, just thinned down a bit. The illustration shows one o-ring slot, but of course there is 2. The original design on the right, new lower profile lever on the left. Sorry for fuzzy pic, but it's all I have for now.

Just got (3) shift levers from Ted -- these are unbelievable...

Guess I should start building up some reels for personal use.

From Tom at Cortez -- Couple of narrow Jigs, couple of 99 sizers -- then put together this beautiful Blue Ribbon Squidder Jr from Tom also.

Parts from Bryan & Alan.

Thank You for the great products, Gentlemen!

We are more fortunate than we know.

Cannot take any of this for granted -- these products are remarkable.

Best Always,

(REVISED) Hey Ted, got a few installed the other day and they look great. Excellent work!

Please put me down for more (2) blue
                                          (2) red
                                          (1) black
                                          (2) green
                                          (1) gold

If its possible to get them all with black "O" rings that would be great. If not that's OK too as their going to look great no matter what.
Your work is appreciated and thanks for offering these!
best regard's,  ..  Lou

Thanks Lou, and I have extra black O-rings so every lever will have the black ones for sure. Colored O-rings will be an added option and thrown in for no charge. I'll have better matching color O-rings this next go round.

I'm picking up the next batch of levers tomorrow and sending to plater this week, so 2-3 weeks and we will be back in business.

Ted, it has been a rough winter so far, I had a concelletions on one of my projects at the last minute and my cookie jar is almost empty. If you don't mind, put a couples aside for me, maybe two of each for all colors. if you have any old style, I take those as well, but as I've said, you will need to wait a little until I put some cookies back in that jar.
If you need to move these, I understand and please don't worry.

Thanks Ted!

No problem Sal. I'll put the stuff on lay-away for you. I'll bury it all in a coffee can so nobody else can get at em. They'll be 2 paces west of the 4th blueberry bush, just in case something happens between now and then.

Ted,   The old style levers arrived in the mail late today.....   I put them on a Cortez JM and a 500s that took some donated parts from the Cortez build.   They look great.   I will need 2 more silver new style levers and 1 in red.

Tried to add a photo and IE crashes every time.....  Worked with Firefox..

Very nice Dan. Both reels look great. That 501 is just plain mean looking. I can see you've been shopping here on the forum by looking at that 501 you built. Love it !!

....and I'd like to see a pic of that silver beach before you start modifying it. You may have a early model worthy of keeping all original.

Inside the two reels are Black Pearl double dog bridges and gears, smooth drag washers, SS post from Scott's and I have a crank and stars on their way from Adam.  The shift lever is the icing on the cake.

I will post some pictures of the Silver Beach soon.

Hi Ted,
Nice work with the design of these, and then the refinement to reduce the profile (and wide range of color choice). Do you ship these gems to international members? I seem to remember the first 4/0 spacer bars were US shipping only.
Thanks,
Mike

Update: New batch of lower profile levers are in my paws and heading to plater today. Should be about 2 week turn around.

I also had my machinist make a few that fit the eccentric of a Baja 113, and us113. It's same lever, just different cutout to fit the us113 eccentric. I have 15 samples, and 5 are spoken for, the other 10 are first come, first served. If there's demand I will possibly have more made for the Baja/us113.

2nd pic is the Baja lever. The ring is sitting loose is why it looks like the lever rubs against it, but when reel is assembled it works as it should, without rubbing. It will be silver or black.

Wow, I never thought I'd have this kind of reaction all from a shift lever. I'm very humbled.

Adam, the lever fits your pg541, 545, 454,400 and several others I listed earlier in this thread..... Mark T, our resident Pro Gear guru has installed a couple and says they work great.

Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best eh?

I'm sitting here in the same boat as Sal.  The rain has me working minimum hours.  But I'll be putting in an order down the road too.

I bet you are going to have a third run at some point...

My apologies Mr. Red, everything went to the plater yesterday. just black and silver on the first small batch of 15. Other colors can definitely be done in the very near future. I'm planning another run of levers before end of Feb. and we can do red us113 levers in that run.

FYI, new levers fit the jigmaster and up, including 113h. All have the exact same original equipment Penn lever(#66). The new lever fits them all. Toms jiggys and 4/0's, Accurate reels, Pro gear, Lee Pro, etc.

It is not compatible with the smaller penns like squidder
. Tom H makes the sweet squidder levers for all you squidder fans out there. (Cortez Conversions)
