Title: Central coast land based fishing questions
Post by: pjstevko on December 24, 2017, 05:12:53 AM
Anyone ever do any land based rockfish / lingcod fishing in the central coast area?

According to the fishing regs lingcod and rockfish is open to take year round from land so I'm thinking of hitting the rocky shores of the central coast this winter.

I was thinking of using a 7-8ft rod and a 4000 sized spinner with 20lb braid. Lures would be bucktails, swimbaits and jigs up to 1oz. Sound reasonable?

Any info, tips, tricks or advice is appreciated  ;D

Hi PJ,

There are a few YouTube videos. I think the crew from a Tackle Warehouse also posted a video.

Check this video out.

When we used to camp in big sur we'd fish off of some of those tall cliffs that fall straight into the ocean. Some were over some channels between rocks with a lot of surge. It was pretty much fishing straight up and down so we used those clear bobbers you can add some water to for weight and adjust the leader so the bait would be a foot or two off the bottom to prevent get hung in the rocks. Caught various rockfish that tasted great on the BBQ, nothing big though. Some of the cliffs were very tall so be careful. Mostly by the Lucia area because we were camping nearby.
Always wanted to try poke polling. That looks fun, might want to go online and check that out.

there are lots of access roads north of cayucos that lead from highway one to the ocean .  it would be fun to explore them.  i'll bet you could find lots of good spots to fish from.

That's the exact area I was thinking of trying out! It'd make for a fun weekend trying out all the rocky shores.... Maybe I'll have to give it a go....

big lingcod are in close this time of year.  they are mostly breeding females with big bellies loaded with eggs, but there are also plenty of smaller males chasing them around.  it's good fishing right now.

Plenty of good shore fishing in Monterey county. Pacific Grove has some great fishing, just watch the protected areas. I definitely miss it.

PJ,. Merry Christmas!
I shore fish from Santa Maria to Half Moon Bay concentrating on the area from Monterey north to the Gate.
I am very familiar with the Santa Cruz to Pescadero area.
I use up to 3 oz of weight with everything from a big swim baits to hunks of frozen smelt or freezer burned rock cod.
Be prepared to lose gear as the shoreline rocks are pretty unforgiving.
I buy weights by the 20 lb increment.......
I also almost always bring 2 rods as conditions dictate.  A Fenwick 9' steelhead rod rated to 1 oz and a surf rod from the collection , which one I bring depends on where I am going.
Next time we get together we can chat about tactics,  I have learned more from one guy , frozendog than all my experience to date. I don't know if he is on this site but he is on  pierfishing.com
Again best wishes and Merry Christmas!

Ok. Reels are as follows,
The Fenwick gets a Shimano FX 4 k , been trashed more than once and still going strong.
This also is my perch rig.

The surf rods get either a Mitchell 4470 , a reel that was not widely distributed in the US but absolutely bullit proof, or one of the Dam Quick Supers that are just about indestructible. I have three and fish them all , even the nice one.
My rods are a pile except the Harnell, but they still catch fish.
I also will use several different Uglys  just to fill the holes.

I have been thinking about a Pescadero trip and I know Wayne, el Pescadero and Khahn are interested.
My great x 4 grandfather is interred at the Catholic cemetery in Pescadero and I am the only one left to tend his grave so I could I could cover two bases......

JT!    Buddy Boy!

Yes I will join you & others on a Pescadero trip but only after you pay your respects to your Dearly Departed Relatives in the Catholic Cemetery.   After that the first round of Bloody Mary's at the Duarte's Restaurant bar are on me plus everyone attending gets a piece of their Blackberry Pie!

Mrs. Pescador & I spent the day in Panama City, Panama & tomorrow we will be in Cartagena Colombia!  On a 12 day cruise after 5 days with our beautiful Grandchildren in Astoria, NY.

Down side NO fishing charters available due to the docking & departure times of the cruise ship.  To late to arrive & too early to depart!

So the Mrs. gets all day with me! A positive don't you think Dominick!!!

Reelly enjoying myself😄

Wayne

If ya get tired of chuckin or losin lures, best wait-for-'em bait I've found is whole anchovies ona double hook(big hook~5/0 in the skull n' a stinger ~3/0 in the back).

Might try those clear casting bubbles too with a real light jig head with a 6-8' leader after the bubble. Save a bunch of tackle and suspends the bait just off the bottom. I think I get them at K-mart for a couple bucks for 6. You can add water to the bubble to adjust the weight for casting. Used to catch some nice grennling that way by throwing it right next to a big rock and the light jig flutters down the face. Really fun if you don't have the patience like me to soak bait.

Daron!

Dominick is not as tough as he seems- he just needs more fiber in his diet.

Great day here.

Do you guys think 20# leader is gonna be enough? Or is that too high?

In the rocks, that should be okay.  In the sand, 12# or 15# max.

That's exactly what I was thinking!

No fishing on this trip to the coast due to weather... I'll have to try again at some other time
