Title: Yet another 113hxn T4N1 aka "the sleeper 4/0"
Post by: steelfish on February 01, 2018, 12:45:21 AM
well, I had this idea since Randy was talking about the new 113hnn kit from tiburon.
in my mind I have the plan to make it look like a mini Baja Special but it wasnt a mini Baja Special its more like a Narrow Baja Special (which is already narrow).

anyway, first thing to do was to paint some old maroon easy drag access side plates from dark red to dark Black, I used 3 coats of leather shoes tint/dye, I add a generous coat of tint to a really cleaned side plate (lots of dish degreaser and alcohol) then let it dry for couple of hours and final coat was on next day, then let it dry for 2-3 days (I was busy not didt on purpose).

the sleeper 4/0 comes from the black side plates, people will think this is a low speed 2:1  113 reel with small drag washers, but really inside is wearing the guts from a red sideplate 113h, to make it a bit similar to a mini Baja Special (it looks more like US senator for the silver frame but ooh well..) I installed some 4:1 newell gears I have as spare, I also have the original Steel gears form the reel if I want to change it later.
the rest is all stock parts form a 113h, most of them are new parts, bridge, drag washers, springs, delrin undergear washer, hex SS screws, Boss 5/0 knob, Alan aluminum handle, etc..
I even used the old pitted chrome rings to keep it with the sleeper theme.

It ended up looking much better than I expected, so you will have to excuse me with my tons of pics of every angle, I even will add some comparative pictures aside of a Baja Special to use it as reference on how narrow it is.

they started like this
(http://alantani.com/gallery/23/3592_31_01_18_5_25_39_23217352.jpeg)

now they look like this with a little tint help, regular red sideplate on top
(http://alantani.com/gallery/23/3592_31_01_18_5_25_16_232151076.jpeg)

newell gears and stock steel gears

someone said 113h are like legos, too many options to chose from, this are not too many upgrades but still many cheap options to make it look different from the rest T4N1 builds, this pic was taken at 2am, too exited to go to sleep.

Vs regular width 113h reel
(http://alantani.com/gallery/23/3592_31_01_18_5_25_00_23214510.jpeg)

Vs Baja Special reel width, Baja special looks like a big reel, when the true is its a narrow comfortable reel

you have to look twice to dont confuse the T4N1 kit with a US senator model.

one of a kind, a Blacky 113h senator
(http://alantani.com/gallery/23/3592_31_01_18_5_26_12_232201280.jpeg)

between other projects and expenses I will try to get some upgrades from time to time for this reel to make it a real
Sleeper reel, old forgotten Blacky 113 outside and 113h SS guts inside.

...........................Still in progress but I will use it as is as many times I can, a stock 113h can do it all
in this zones.

sweet Alex! let us know how the finish holds up!

you bet.

good thing is that if the finish start to fade away I will just take my black kewi shoe polish paste or tint tube, do few passes on the reel sideplates and on my working shoes at the same time.

so, far with all the yamaha grease on my hands while working on the reel the tint didnt dyed my hands or anything, seems impregnated on the sideplate material

Excellent idea to make it Silver & Black! Lota people from the East Bay Area buy or get their vehicles in these colors to support the Oakland Raiders football team.

That's cool Alex.

FYI. Mine held 500 yards of Daiwa J braid 65lb test. The Avet Raptor HXJ I filled next held 475 yards of the same.

thanks for the info Keith,

I will put as much 80# braid I can fit on it, I remember the Boss saying he put something like 350yds of 80#, I will be happy to fit 300yds, no need for tons of line.

And thanks for the info Keith!  I'm torn between 65 and 80lb JB or Powerpro.

https://www.albanycountyfasteners.com/Flat-Socket-Head-5-40-Screw-304-Stainless-Steel-p/11540000.htm

I got the 3/8" for the left sideplate and 3/4" for right sideplate.

the 3/8" ended up being too short, so you better go with the 1/2" long for left side plate
and the 3/4" long was ok on some holes but in some places 1/8" was sticking outside the frame on the narrow frame zones on the top, so I have to take the screws out and cut 1/8"-2/8" form those screws to keep them inside the frame, if you get 1/2" screws those will help on those parts.

good think I only ordered 25 of each size of the 3/8" and 3/4" long, Now I know I need some 1/2" and 5/8" and few 3/4" more.

I also ordered some 6-40 socket hex screws for the bridge on 5/8" size but ended up being too short too.
https://www.albanycountyfasteners.com/6-40-Socket-Head-Screws-18-8-Stainless-Steel-p/24200.htm

so, I used stock screws instead, in my next order I will get some on 3/4" size and pretty sure those will work.

thanks amigo, I also want to see this reel catch some nice yellows or groupers, according to my wife I have way more reel than I can handle on each trip, so to convince her that I need them all of them I wil have to take 6 trolling/bottom fishing setups on my next trip  ::) ::)

you got it just right amigo Bill, hopefully nobody will want to take this reel from the boat rod racks because its an old beatup 113 reel.

BTW, Lee just kindly sent me NC (thanks compadre, you are one of a kind) a SS 113h dog, so I will put it on this reel, as well as some SS 304 hex 6-40 screws for the bridge to complete the whole hex screws kit on the reel, no more sliping flat head screws.

first I need to say that I not using this reels everytime I go fishing (thats one problem of having many reels on the same line rating), so, it doesnt have many hours of saltwater splashing over it or handing it or in direct sunlight that can be the cause for the paint to start to fading away, but it I have used it in few trips during 2018, so I will show you how it looks right now.

in the first pic you can see BUT only on direct sunlight, you can see few spots where you can see a little bit of the factory marroon color of the side plate, but I think those spots where like that since the beginning when I tinted the sideplates because I never took the sideplates outside on direct sunligth to check for missing spots to add one or more coats of tint when I dyed the sideplates, I did everything at night so they looked pretty black to me at that time, or maybe is the black tint that is fading away from the saltwater, handling it and direct sunlight who knows, I wasnt really paying attention on how the paint was holding up on these months but if the the paint have faded away a little bit that is a good new for me cuz I never noticed anykind of tint on my hands of clothes while fishing or when cleaning it after fishing, that means the sideplates got really impregnated with the black tint and dont stain at all.

judge by yourself guys

thanks buddy, this was just an experiment but it can be improved, next time I might just sumerge both sideplates on a recipient full of black shoe dye (its cheap as chips) for a whole day or even more instead of adding two or three coats as I did.

I am debating doing this with a really crappy set of rings I have at home that are badly pitted.  I will post the results.

I don't think it will work on metal rings, only maybe on the graphite plates.

I did the same thing a few months back. It I used Lincoln black leather shoe dye.
Applied three coats and still didn't have good coverage. It was to a point that should I continue or abandon the project. I rubbed and washed it under the faucet and some dye came off and I wasn't satisfied with the results so I put it off until I came upon this post today.
My side plates were sun faded and not shiny so I don't know if it made a difference either way.
Just my experience.

looks like I never mentioned this reel has the octagon insert my compadre Lee made and sold few years ago along with the SS dog from him also.

the drag remained at 22# what seems to be the advertized stock drag for the 113h but its really smooth in all over the drag range, Sal made a lab test on those octagon inserts and was able to reach around 30# (if I recall correctly), I dont want to push mine until upgrading to SS sleeve.
