Title: mini bearing pullers
Post by: Lauren VanDerWeide on March 31, 2018, 12:08:59 AM
Hi all,
What's a good puller for removing stuck bearings out of stainless Newell bearing cups?

Go to the Alan Tani home page and do a search for bearing puller.  There is a bunch of them.  Sometimes you don't need more than a piece of wire with a small bend at the end.  Be careful about pulling too hard on the inner race because you can warp the cage and ruin the bearing.

Also, look for a you tube video about removing a stuck bearing with toilet paper.

Does the paper trick work on a bearing stuck in the cam follower?

You should be able to push it out from the other side.

There is also the old trick of cutting a slot in the cap and through the bearing to be able to use a screw driver to crank the bearing out. Be careful with the cup and you can reuse.

It seems like the ones in accurate side plates have a little punched mark in them like they did it so the bearing wouldn't fall out. I can get most of them out of Newell plates pretty easy but not in the old accurates

Looks good to me so I just bought one.

Curious design though. The jaws are forced to expand remotely by pressure within the central chamber from a bearing ball.

A little different to the Reelspeed pullers but more adaptable within it's size range  and can extend your puller range up to 8+mm.

I was actually talking to Chris (Rothmar) about getting him to fabricate a larger one so just what I was looking for.

Hope it performs well.

Thanks Wolli.

The Gedore puller arrived today.

I adapted the hammer from the Reel Speed puller which was a convenient neat fit.

You can see how the spread is actuated by a plunger far back in the jaws.

This design is not as secure a fit as the Reel Speed puller but hopefully it  will be strong enough.

Now to wait for a suitable candidate to give it a maiden test drive :)

Found another like tool:

Also comes in a set covering all sizes, and looks like the set would cover you for seals , pilot bearings/bushes and such

How does the build quality feel/expected longevity?  Wish I could luck into a set of the reelspeed pullers but this looks like the next best thing out there.

It's German made so not cheap crap.

Based on the design, I had my reservations but so far so good.

The acid test will be trying to extract a bearing firmly rusted inside a metal recess.

It does have one advantage over the larger Reel Speed Puller though, The reel Speed pullers are imperial sizes so not a good match for metric bearings in the larger sizes.

The Gedore puller has an infinitely adjustable range from 5 to 9mm. If someone were to manufacture an effective smaller version say from 3 to 5 mm it would be one handy tool.
