I  recently  got  a  bnib   16s   from  R pauly   sn  b030170  Wondering  about  drag material in  it   any way to tell  without opening it up  ?

If the reel is still original from factory it should have HT-100 drag system.  We do have a Dura-Drag upgrade however the HT-100 will work fine (assuming you are going to use it).
