Title: Picking Up P21XN Kits At Tiburon On Tuesday 8/28. Please Send Payment Soon!
Post by: Vintage Offshore Tackle on August 22, 2018, 05:47:23 PM
I will be picking up the P21XN kits on Tuesday next week, August 28 and will be shipping shortly thereafter.  I will be on the road for a long time beginning September 3, so I would really appreciate it if everyone who ordered a kit would please send payment to arrive by August 29 so that I can get everything shipped by September 1, which is the last day that the post office will be open before I leave.

The kits are $129 plus $4.94 for shipping to anywhere in the USA by USPS first class parcel with tracking.  If you would like to send a check or money order, please PM me and I will send you my address.  If you would like to send PayPal, please send it to my account at rosygirl900@aol.com.  If you would like me to send you a PayPal invoice, please PM me your PayPal email address.  If you would like me to send you an invoice from Square.com which you can pay with any credit card, please let me know.  In any event, please PM me your correct shipping address.  I have had several instances lately where the address that PayPal has on file is no longer current.

If you are not ready for your kit yet, or if you need to cancel your order, please let me know.

I hope that you all love the kits.  I can't begin to thank all of you enough for your support.

Randy

Well here it is, another home run, a p21xn. Beautiful fit and finish. I've had these nos Baja pacific side plates looking for a home, they look great with the dark blue. No issues with assembly at all, just like butter. A motive fab titanium blade and star, the knob is pro challenger.  Inside is stock penn parts since I plan to use this for a 20lb set up they should be fine. Great job Randy, thanks as always for  the time and effort you put into these unique projects. Now to figure out a rod for it .Hmmm...

Ed, if you thumb the shoulder of the spool instead of the line, I am sure that your thumb will fit.  I originally would thumb the line, but after someone showed me that you can apply pressure more evenly by thumbing the spool shoulder instead, my casting distance increased and my backlash frequency decreased significantly.  It's a change, but it quickly becomes second nature.

That sounds perfect and if you use Maxcuatro you should get plenty of line on there! Looks to be turning out to be great Albacore and schoolie Yellowfin reels!  :)

First off I don't know how RP gets USPS Sunday delivery but this is like the third time.  I couldn't get a sense for how narrow the p21xn was until I set it up next to a p21.  Wow.  Here is a 501xn Cobalt blue and 506xn Purple lined up with a P21 506.  These are going to be a blast

One little hiccup!  The 501xn went together flawlessly.  I'm using a NOS of Newell gears in my 506, the Penn spool fits fine, the Tib won't go into the pinion. But the Tib spool works fine in stock Penn 506 pinion.

I'm using a used set of Newell's in my 501xn and both Tib spools fit in the pinion just fine.  So tomorrow I will take the 506 down and try to bore out the pinion a bit.  If your using the 506 with new Newell gears try a test fit before you put the whole shebang together.

Other than that little thing I'm excited to spool these up and try for some local Dorado on Friday.

I tried the reel on fuji seats.  The reel clamp bracket will not fit a size 20 fuji seat or larger.  The width of the clamp attachment holes is more than wide enough but the area where the brackets attach are too narrow and prevent the foot from seating flush to the reel seat.  If you must have the reel clamped you need a rod with a size 18 or smaller seat.

For me this is not a problem as my use is porgy, fluke or sea bass and the clamp is not needed.   I like these kits so much I have to get a couple more for my children.

I see what you mean, Mike and Bob.  It looks like the rod clamp brackets will need to be removed to use the P21XN on the larger reel seats and the rod clamp will not be able to be used.  I don't see any other solution.  I think that it should be OK mounted deckhand style with some padding material in between the base and the rod to fill the gap, but it is not ideal.

I am sorry that Tiburon and I did not realize that the rod clamp brackets would would be sitting higher than the foot of the base.  If you are fishing relatively light tackle (30 lb. line or less) on a rod with a reel seat, I would think that you would be OK without the rod clamp and can remove the rod clamp brackets (I am usually too lazy to put on my rod clamp on anything but the heavy gear and haven't had a problem yet), but if anyone is concerned that their reel seat mounting is not strong enough without the rod clamps and would like to return their kit, I will take them back for a full refund.

Thanks,

Randy

Hi Randy, Hope you don't mind me sticking my nose into this (I didn't order one of these kits), but it might be a relatively easy fix depending on how much interference there is with the larger reel seats. I's a bit hard to tell just working off photos of the clamp without a reel seat in place, but would it be possible to either;
Cut a bevel along the sharp corner of the brackets closest to the rod - that would require it to be re-anodized and I don't know it there is enough material there to make enough room anyway, or;
Place a flat spacer of metal or maybe delrin about 1/8" thick under the reel foot to raise it 1/8" or so - you would need longer screws to connect the foot to the frame.

a very rough sketch;

If it was me, I'd either not use the clamp like you said, or try a delrin spacer if I needed a clamp. Like I said, I don't know if these would work but thought I would throw a couple of ideas around - feel free to tell me to but out!  :)

Thank you Mike.  I really appreciate you taking the time to work on this for me. Those are both great ideas, and I think that making the spacer and supplying the longer screws would be doable if anyone is fishing heavy line and needs the clamp or is using deckhand style (no reel seat) rods.

I am going to be traveling until 10/2, but if anyone would like me to pursue the spacer idea with Tiburon, please let me know.  The offer to accept returns still stands.

Thanks again,

Randy

Yes Randy check on a spacer for this reel. I did all this work I don't want to return it. It does have good potential so a spacer is the way to go.

I discovered the same thing when I went to spool up my first one last night...

I like the idea of a spacer under the foot, but the foot is dovetailed, so I'm not sure how that would work. I was thinking maybe pad the foot with something, maybe cork tape. That might be a little too squishy though. I'll try it when I get home tonight. I might just grind a bit off the sides of the reel seat....

But, I'm only fishing 20#-30# tops on this rod...I'll probably just take the clamp off...

I'll let you know about the cork tape though!

-Mike

Hey Mike, that reel looks pretty sweet!

Tiburon tongue has a taper that would not allow a "spacer" under it.  In other words the tongue is screwed to the frame, but it is also keyed to the frame

I do think Tiburon could easily design a thicker seat tongue. It would be the easiest fix IMHO

It would be cheaper than trying to find a rod that will work with the reel.

I know that this is really bad timing, and I would like more than anything to be able to work on solving this problem, but I am on my way out of the country and will not be home until 10/2.  I will forward your suggestions to Tiburon, but I am not going to be able to ride close heard on this until I get back.  It sounds like the best solution is to have Tiburon make the thicker bases with longer screws, and I am going to try to get that done.

In the meanwhile, these reels will fit into any reel seat on any rod if the rod clamp brackets are removed.  As a temporary measure for those  for those of you whose application requires the use of a rod clamp, the only thing that I can suggest is to find something that will sit under the base to bring it up close to the same level as the bottom of the clamp brackets.  I realize that this is not a great solution, but I can't think of anything else to do until Tiburon comes up with a permanent fix.

For those of you who need to use a rod clamp and just don't want to wait for a fix, you can return your kit to me for a full refund, including the shipping charge both ways.  Just pack it back up, preferably in the same box that it came in, and send it back to me by USPS first class parcel with tracking, email me the tracking number, and I will issue the refund as soon the post office shows the package as received.

I am very sorry for the problem.  If you would like to talk with me, you can reach me at 805-748-9202.

Tiburon tongue has a taper that would not allow a "spacer" under it.  In other words the tongue is screwed to the frame, but it is also keyed to the frame

I do think Tiburon could easily design a thicker seat tongue. It would be the easiest fix IMHO

Oops! I had recently pulled the straight sided foot off my Cortez squidder to copy for a 501 project and had forgotten the tiburon feet were dovetailed -  Ted is correct as usual!

Tiburon asked me to apologize to everyone for the problem, and to let them know that they will be remaking the rod clamp blocks with a large bevel, which as you can see below, was how they were originally designed (and how MHC suggested that they be fixed).  They are going to run the new blocks and I am going to pick them up on October 4 when I get back from my trip, and I will send them out ASAP for every kit that was shipped.  All that you will have to do is unscrew and remove the original blocks, grease the threads, and screw in the replacement blocks.

If anyone cannot wait that long and wants to return their kits for a full refund, please let me know.

Thank you for your patience.  I am very sorry for the problem.

Randy

Here is Tiburon's explanation of what happened:

Randy,
The design included a large bevel so that the clamp blocks would clear the reel seats. My print showed the bevel but neither my shop guys nor myself noticed the the bevel was not put on the part.

Don't mean to brag, don't mean to boast, but... don't this look bada$$ with 259 Live Bait Caster plates? I want to put a paddle-style double handle on it; gotta find one.

Pretty cool Joe. Thats a great idea. Now you gotta a double ring strong p21XN. I opted for the HS version so I got double rings on the tailplate only, but do have 5:1 gears!

I heard about that HS option too late to place an order :P :-\ :'(   Good for jigging.  Let's see a picture.

Mine would be slow and powerful with 259 gears -- probably a good blackfish (tautog) reel. Worth the full Tani treatment of SS sleeve, double-dogging, and maybe 7-stack drag.  I just had to see how it looked.

Looks great Joe, the double rings, narrow spool and low gears make it a very strong little winch with a classic look.

I've been trying to convince myself that I don't need one of these kits...but the 259 project is hard to ignore. Can't wait to see those finished...great thinking guys! 8)

The rods I am planning on using my mini 349H on have trigger handles so the rod clamp went away before I put the reel together.  I don't see the need for a clamp on a this reel.

I'm using Surfmaster 250 parts for my low speed reel, they are easier to find than 259 parts.

No way babey!, no return for me & no need for a clamp for me on a reel this narrow.

Mike. I have never heard of anyone putting the low speed (3.2:1?) Newell gears into a Jigmaster, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they can't be made to work.

It would be easier to use a low speed side plate assembly like the Surfmaster 250.  Then it's easy to change gear ratios as needed.

I've got Progear 5:1 brass gears in a 501 and a Pacifica 2000 that is slowed to 4:1 with a steel gear. I don't see why the Newells wouldn't work. I agree with Lee, if you have a reason to go slow you may as well crawl.

I think there's an issue with the pinion and the spool shaft. They're a little different on the newells
