Obituary

Salvatore D. Ciarlante passed away on Friday, October 9, 2020 after a very courageous battle, with his family by his side. He is the beloved husband of 35 years of Caterina (nee Canale) Ciarlante. He is also the devoted and loving father of Alyssa and Anthony Ciarlante. Sal was thrilled to add a Brittany puppy, Maggie, to his family, as well. Salvatore is also so proud of being one of seven siblings and he has many adoring nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Sal was born in Macchia, d'Iserina, Italy in the province of Molise on May 31, 1959 and emigrated to America at the age of 14. He remained quite proud of his heritage and took care to instill the culture within his children. He was an experienced General Contractor, by trade, and owned and operated his own business, for many years. He is a resident of Havertown and his many works of fine craftsmanship are evident all over the neighborhood.
Sal was an avid fisherman and he enjoyed refurbishing and building unique fishing reels. He was part of a wonderful fishing community for which he befriended folks from all over the globe. He found peace and joy in gardening and cooking wonderful dishes for his family. Sal cherished his family, above all else and savored every opportunity to explore new things with his wife and children.

The services and interment will be private to the family. There will be a celebration of Salvatore's life in the Spring of 2021, as the Ciarlante family is respecting the pandemic and does not wish to put their family and friends at risk. This website will be updated as more information becomes available.

decker found this.  he lives close to the family  or at least alot closer than us.  they have a family service this friday, closed to family only.  i would have flown out, but i started thinking about it and i doubt that they would have appreciated me walking off an airplane and into a church.

it looks like they will have a service in the spring.  i will go then.   :-[

To the family and close friends of Mr. Ciarlante - I am sorry for your loss.

The few times I spoke with Sal - his kindness always made me smile.

It was clear he was a caring and gentle individual - and must have been a great father and spouse.

Rest in Peace mate - you will be missed by many.

I've always enjoyed reading Sal's posts but his craftsmanship was well beyond anything I've seen. many come and go but Sal is one of the few that will always stay on top.
My thoughts go to his family.

This picture shows a change of sorts. Several months ago Sal asked me who I got my Newell parts from and I let him know. He suddenly started buying colored Newells NIB. Last year Sal tanked a 9/0 for me and then soon after another. Prior to going in the hospital Sal completed a 10/0 that he wanted me to test on goliath groupers. Have not hooked one since I got the reel. A few weeks ago I got a good deal on a couple 12/0 reels in sweet condition. If not for Sal's influence I would never desire to have a 12/0 or a 10/0. Sal and I horse traded a lot of reels the past few years. What an amazing man to influence so many people whom he had never met except through our site. A great friend whom we all shall miss dearly. One of a kind special people. RIP my friend.

Ugh, I still don't know what to say  :'(

Ted emailed me to let me know right away.  I've been on here a few times reading all the posts, know I need and want to write something.

Word just fail me.  I don't know how to express what I think or feel very well.  I'm so thankful for ALL of you guys on here who've given so much to me.  Not just reels or fishing, but life lessons and advice. Kind words and prayers.

Sal connected with right from the start and helped me learn a lot really fast.  Giving advice and ideas to help me refine and expand my own.  He is a great role model.  Someone to look up to on how to live with generosity, integrity, and work ethic.

Thank you Sal, I wish I could have met you in person.  I will miss you.

I just saw the notice of Sal Ciarlante's passing.  Alan, thank you for posting this unfortunate event.  I did not know Sal personally, however, the world is a sadder place without him.  Sal was generous with his time and knowledge for everyone here on at.com.  He would always help out someone with a problem with a reel and finding a solution.  Sal would "torture test" experimental parts until they failed, all for our benefit.  He helped all of us here to be better, by leading by example.  He will be missed, but not forgotten.

My condolences to his family.

It is kind of funny...but when I do a posting nowadays — I somehow still expect to get a response from Sal.

Then I realize that I won't be getting a response online or by phone — but the good feeling of Sal's response is always there — and always will be.

That seems like the true measure of a great man and a good friend...

Hello,

Please forgive me, this is my real first time of being on the website (for longer than one minute as I just break out in tears every time I try) and so I am not quite sure where to post this message so I suppose that I will post it on every page that is listed under the In Memory of Sal Ciarlante. That is the only way that I know that I will reach everyone who commented, left lovely messages of condolence, or wished my family comfort, in any way.

I cannot express how much the love and support, that my family received from AlanTani.com, has meant to us! There really are no words to express my deep, deep appreciation and very sincere gratitude for your continued support! This past month has been just so devastating and painful for me, Alyssa and Anthony and grieving in the time of a global pandemic has just made it even more difficult. It is still very surreal and I wake each day thinking perhaps it was just a bad dream. I must admit that I have not yet found the courage to be in Sal's work area (where he did all of his custom reel work and repairs) for even a whole minute, yet. On the one time I walked back there, I saw that he still had a small paintbrush in some sort of gel and his tools were spread out all over...it must have been what he was working on the day we left for the hospital, so long ago. I walked back there, and I could just see him sitting on that chair, with a beautiful smile on his face, doing what gave him such satisfaction and joy! It was all I could take, but I am working up the courage to go back there again, some day soon. The kids and I do spend time in Sal's mancave, each night, and it's comforting to be surrounded by his things.

I would have liked very much to have the celebration of Sal's life, that I believe he deserved, but I felt very strongly that we needed to respect the pandemic and do everything in our power to keep our family, friends and loved ones safe! As you read in his obituary, we are planning a post-Covid 19, late-springtime memorial service, God willing. I will be sure to post all of the details, at that time! We had an immediate family funeral and laid Sal's remain to rest on a stormy Friday (October 16) and I felt as though the heavens were crying for my Sal. As I told you all before, not only did the Alan Tani family get mentioned in Sal's obituary, but Alyssa (our daughter) mentioned it in his Eulogy, as well.

I am so sorry that this first post of mine was so long but I just wanted to be sure to express my gratitude and to let you all know how important you are to me and the kids!

I wish you, and your families, a blessed Thanksgiving holiday!

All my very best,
Cathy Ciarlante & Family

Hello Cathy, Alyssa and Anthony.

Thank you for keeping us in touch with Sal's world. Dominick is correct, Sal is and will be missed by members around the globe - I'm the seventh red dot down on the east coast of Australia :) and think of him every day. Distance wasn't a barrier to Sal reaching out to connect with people and develop friendships around the world and distance won't lessen our gratitude for having known him. All of us were influenced by Sal in some way and more than a few of us were inspired to take up tools to explore different ways to improve our reels. Sometimes our experiments didn't go to plan but Sal was always the first to point out the positive aspects and encourage us to 'keep the flame burning'.

All the best,
Mike

Sal's passing constitutes the loss of a cornerstone of this group.  It is unreasonable to believe that anyone will be able to fill his shoes, as contributed so much to the knowledge base and expanded the technology of the Penn Senator.  It would be fitting for Penn to come out with a Sal special that incorporated all of his ingenious modifications to an already good reel.  He took good and made it great.
In addition, he befriended many and was  very generous not only with his knowledge but also with parts and reels.  To say that he was a rare and gifted individual is a monumental understatement.
While he will be missed, he lives on in the advances/modifications he brought to reel technology.  Every time someone says, "tank", that's Sal.  Every time you think about adding more drag disks, that's Sal.  Double dog, Sal.  The list goes on.
To Sal's family and loved ones, my deepest condolences.  Our words are so limited as to not do justice to the man.  I do not wish for him to rest in peace.  Instead, I wish for him to be with Father and to continue fishing and working on reels and whatever else may catch his fancy.  May he truly be blessed.

Well Said Albert,
Sal taught me everything I know. He had the patience of a Saint. I miss him deeply, but We all must carry on in his Honor.
He was one of a kind and taught me a lot more in life than reels.
I am honored to have known the Man.
My Deepest Sympathy and Condolences To Cathy, Anthony and Alyssa.
Rest in Peace my Friend, I'll see you on the other side.

Although I have not been active on the AT Site for some time Sal and I remained in contact exchanging Penn parts  and info over the years.
We exchanged Christmas Greetings  annually and when I did not hear from Sal this Christmas I checked the Site and was saddened to learn of his passing.
His kindness and generosity knew no bounds and he was always willing to help and advise those with their reel problems.
He shall be greatly missed on  this Site.

To his wife Cathy and family I send my heart felt condolences and give thanks that Sal was my friend.

Hello to everyone,

I realized something that I wanted very much to share with you all on this amazing site. I know that this is a site dedicated to folks who love all things fishing and so I apologize that my posts have been only personal. Of course all of Sal's family enjoys fishing (it was kind of a given with him as a husband and father!) and I hope that someday we will have tales about the one that got away, to share with you all.

As such, today I wanted you all to know that I realized it's when I am feeling the most sad, and most overwhelmed by the incredible grief, that I come to this site to read the lovely notes and look at the lovely faces of the kind people who have helped my family see some glimmer of light, in these dark, dark days! I know that most of you haven't even had the chance to meet Sal in person but the connections that he made with you were very real and very personal! He ALWAYS talked about how much he wanted to have all of his friends, from this site, come to our home and visit with us and, of course, share some food and drink!

Again, as this very painful (for so many) year comes to an end, I want you all to know, once again, how very grateful Alyssa, Anthony and I are for your love and support! I wish you all a healthy new year filled with peace and joy.

With so much gratitude and love,
Cathy Ciarlante (always and forever proud to be Mrs. Sal Ciarlante)

Not to be repeating, or corny — but if there is anything that might be helpful — just let us know on the site, or personally with a PM or a phone call.  It will be taken care of quickly.

Best Regards,

Good morning Alan Tani Family,

I just wanted to touch base with you all, as I have not be able to check-in recently. At the risk of sounding completely goofy, I find so much comfort on this site because it was so important to my Sal and so I am sad that I haven't been able to log in more often!

I hope that you are all doing well, staying safe and finding lots of ways to find joy in this virtual environment! I hope that the fishing is going well, for those of you who are not snowed/iced in, as we are here on the East Coast!

Unfortunately, my only brother has been moved to hospice recently, and I have been splitting my time between visiting him and caring for our 88-year-old mother (who he lived with until he went into the hospital). I don't know if Sal shared the fact that he and my brother were diagnosed with cancer, only 17 days apart. These past two years have really been so terrible for my family. My brother is only one year older than Sal. I must admit that, knowing he will never return home again, makes visits with my brother so very difficult and with all of this coming just on the heels of losing my husband, best friend and the true love of my life, it's traumatizing for me (and Alyssa and Anthony, too!).

I wish that I had better news to report, from the Ciarlante home, but I know that better days are on the horizon and my Sal will help us all to get through these troubling times! I know that he is here with us and he is watching over us. He cared very much for my brother and I know that he is preparing a place in paradise for him.

I will continue to visit this site and stay in touch because you are all important to me, too! Sending love and good wishes from PA!

All my best,
Cathy

Cathy, If you ever need strength you have us all here for you, as you have been here for all of us.
We, of the Ohana, are here for one another pretty much at all times as we cover all the world's time zones and look out for one another.
Granted, we do have our guardian angels, Sal, and a few other members we've sadly lost over the years looking over all of us.
Now that I think of it we have lost some really great members in our Ohana... we miss you guys!
Thanks for posting, Cathy! When I see your post it makes me feel that I still have a pal in H-town, PA.
My love to you, Anthony, and Alyssa.
Hang in there,

PS- Lucky for your brother, Sal will have a seat at the table ready for him when his time comes.

Wow!  Cathy, we are sorry to hear of your continuing troubles.  It is a little contrite to say that things will get better while you are balancing and sharing your time.  Do realize that things will indeed get better.  Despite the hard times you are enduring take a look back and know that life will go on.  Believe me it will go on to a point of contentment if not one of joy.  It just takes time.  All my best to you and the kids.  Dominick.

Cathy, sorry to hear about your brother.  In addition to losing my wife, my youngest brother died too although it was 6 years prior to my wife.  It must be really hard to lose Sal and now your brother too so soon.

I must say that when I see older posts that Sal replied to it seems like he's still here and I guess he is.

I truly hope that you are all well and staying safe and warm! I am very much looking forward to the earth thawing out a bit and the promise of Springtime!

Cathy, I wish I had words, I do not. This is as tough as can be. I think of Sal every day, and every so often go pull up the last text we had to read, and I have a mailer he sent some part he surprised me with stuck on my bench so he's watching over me to make sure I don't do something stoopid and lose springs bouncing off somewhere. He may not be here physically but his legacy and kind heart live on as an example.

Sal's knowledge & willingness to help out. Cant be replaced. I wont forget our early morning PM's. Wish I hadn't cleared some of them. We talked reels & work. Let him know I was Arborist ( Monkey with a saw ) he talked of his being a stone mason & from I could tell a damn good one

Remember him mentioning in a questioning way, something to do with tree work being dangerous... My response was " Hell ya it's dangerous. Living safe aint that much fun " Cant imagine his response had he known other stuff I was involved in.

My dad has cancer. I have lived with mom & dad for sometime now. So my dad can have the freedom to do as he wishes. I dont like talking about it.

Very glad I got to know Sal how be it briefly. I know He has been missed by me... Jeff

Cathy,
I can tell you that me and my girls will never forget Sal.... I dont do "social media", this is the only forum I belong to. My daughters are still amazed how nice a "stranger", who we never met , could be to us! He re-built their matching pair of reels to perfection, and thru that they get to use "PaPa's" old reels..even if its once a year, on a half day boat on vacation!!! We cherish them greatly, as much as the man who made it possible. Sal will always live on with us!
Much Love...

Hello to everyone,

I just wanted to wish you all a happy Springtime! This was truly Sal's favorite time of the year and Easter was his favorite holiday (mostly because the Easter menu was his favorite)! Every Good Friday, we would take the kids to the beach, walk along the shore, eat boardwalk pizza, and just enjoy each other's company! Even last year, at the beginning of the pandemic, we took the ride just to be together. Today, Alyssa, Anthony and I, drove to the beach and parked where Sal and Anthony would park to go surf fishing, in Ocean City, NJ. We walked to the water and threw a few beautiful daffodils (hand-picked from Sal's garden at home) in the ocean, in his memory. We shared some of our favorite "Daddy" memories and we smiled and cried a whole lot.

We are very much looking forward to the day when we have enough protection from this virus to celebrate Sal's life with a wonderful Memorial. The Alan Tani Family will be the first to be notified, when that is planned!

Wishing you all some warm sun on your face, sweet smells in the air and heavenly blessings always!

xo
Cathy (and family)

Hello to all,

6 months ago, today, this world became a little less bright, a little less beautiful and a little less inviting. 8 months ago, today, when Sal and I left for the hospital, we never even considered the idea of him never returning to his warm home, so filled with love for him (and all things Sal!). Today I went out and turned the dirt in what will become the Sal Ciarlante Memorial Vegetable Garden. I was glad to see that Dominick got those tomatoes plants in already!  :) I just wanted to share two pictures today. The first one is Sal's favorite small tree in the back garden (I think it's called a Bonfire Peach) and the second one is Maggie sitting under his favorite tree in the back of our house.

Sending you all virtual hugs!
xo Cathy

Second shot Wed; i can fly in two weeks. I reached up from the bench last night to grab something while I was building a reel with new Ted parts, and the mailer Sal sent me last summer that I keep there fluttered down right into my tool tray. It sits in a stack with several others, yet his was one that fell on my reel tools....

Hello to my Alan Tani Family,

Please forgive me for not posting in a while! I am trying my hardest to keep up with work and taking care of my mother, and most days I struggle to keep up with it all!

I wanted this site to be the first place that I post this information, because you all meant so much to Sal! I was so hoping that, if I waited and kept patient long enough, we would be completely on the other side of this pandemic and I could feel 100% comfortable that I could hold a lovely memorial service, to honor my husband's beautiful life, while taking care to keep everyone safe. I never anticipated a new variant and, please forgive me for saying this, but who knows if there isn't another one waiting in the wings? As much as I know that not everyone will feel comfortable with this (and I truly understand and respect that!) I also don't want to wait more than one year to memorialize a truly wonderful man. With widespread access to vaccinations (and now, for some, booster shots) I feel that I can now hold a memorial service.

Although there would be no perfect time, I scheduled the memorial for Saturday, October 9, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at Stretch Funeral Home, 236 E. Eagle Road, Havertown, PA 19083. That date is the first anniversary of Sal's passing, so I feel that the date is meaningful and I am working around all of Sal's brothers getting back to the states, so I don't have a wide window of time. I also feel confident that the weather shouldn't cause any hinderance, as early October is generally calm.

As Sal loved nothing more than having his family and friends (especially his fishing buddies) in his home, I would like to extend an invitation to you all, to come to our home, after the service. We live just around the corner from the funeral home and the director will give the short directions out, on the day of the service. I will have Sal's front display room open and, for those who really want to glimpse at where the madness took place, you will be welcome to peek into the workroom that I have preserved in the exact state it was in, all those months ago, when Sal left for the hospital. A word of warning...it isn't pretty!

It is truly with the heaviest heart that I have to plan such a difficult day. Thank you, all, for your continued love, support and kindness!

Hello Cathy

So nice to hear from you!  I only knew Sal for a short time, and was drawn right in by his charisma, humor and wisdom. His passing has been with me, and I've been wanting to honor him properly.  Surely he is with Our Lord today.  Still it cannot be easy for you and your children.

I look forward to Sal's memorial and would like to be of service in any way that I can.  I'm close by so can easily run any necessary errands or help to get people there.  Please feel free to reach out to me by PM for any way I might help, with this event or any other time.

Also, to any members flying in, let me know if I can help. I don't really have room for house guests but can help with airport rides.

Sincerely,
/Joe Coyle

I'm a fairly big guy, but you felt you just put your hand in a shop vise when Sal grabbed you. Dude could probably throw a slate paver playing frisbee golf, but handled the tinest screwdriver in a reel like a surgeon. If anyone attending can, take Cathy up on the offer to visit Sal's reel space. I expect he will be there, almost tangible in the view of drawers of 29-180 spools, and the AT fine parfum of Penn blue, Corrosion X and TS321.

I couldn't agree more. I never knew Sal had so many "brothers" - blood brothers and sisters, paisanos, and adopted brothers, all forming one strong extended family.

It was great to meet Benni and Dom.  Dom spoke at the service.  The family all knew about the Ohana too. Many of them had been fishing on Sal's boat.  We should take Anthony fishing some time.

Once again, Sal showed us how it's done...

It was a pleasure to be around Sal's family and friends.  They made Decker, Benni, and I feel like family right off the bat.  Cathy, Alyssa, and Anthony handled the day with great poise and sent their dad/husband off with honor.  We spent some time in Sal's man cave, and let me say, Sal was more amazing than most of you even thought.  He collected NEWELL reels too!!!  Dwight, must've been in Sal's ear on that one. His space was modest, but set up to handle anything thrown at him.  You could feel Sal's presence and totally understand why Cathy hasn't touched a thing and spends time down there.  It was Sal's happy place and I see why.  Thanks to Cathy and the kids I was able to say a few words about my pal letting all know that Sal was loved globally and was well respected on AT.com.
Always nice to meet members of the Ohana,  Benni and Decker(Joe).
The only way it could've been better would've been if Sal was there himself.
Miss you pal,
Dom

Glad Benni,  Joe and Dom could be there. I wish I could've heard Dominic. Those that read what he writes here in AT know that he is true spirit of Ohana: a very gracious individual. When I met Sal the first time, he was picking me up from the airport to visit Penn. That tour is well documented. Dom was kind enough to cart me from Philly to Manhattan afterward,  two hours or so. You might think there'd be awkward silence somewhere between two people that'd known each four whole hours. Nope. I know that whatever Dom said, was whatever we all would like to say, and delivered with utmost respect and eloquence for our brother Sal.  Boys, if you said you'd felt a firm hand on your shoulder in Sal's shop, when no one was there, I'd believe it.

Thank you and I hope to see you soon. I enjoyed that car ride conversation.
Any one of you guys would've loved to have been there for the stories.  He was well respected and loved.
His sense of humor and pranks are what Sal's friends and family agreed was one of the things most missed in their lives.
John, your a writer, I'm just a guy who writes when necessary.
Warm regards (Ray Hodges always used to say that at the end of his communications)- RIP

Glad you guys could make it. I'm happy to report the Tank was on the SOA with us and landed 3 fish, sadly nothing to really test its power.  It's now on its way back to Dominick via Bryan Young.  Bill

Hello to the Alan Tani family.

I wanted to share some details with you all, from last weekend's memorial, for my loving husband.

It was my (and Alyssa and Anthony's) absolute honor to have members of the website join us, that day! Dom's tribute was eloquent and so very lovely! I was thrilled that he was willing to share some wonderful words with us and everyone who met the folks that Sal met, through this website, were so impressed! We were joined by many family, friends, neighbors, and clients who all knew and loved Sal. Alyssa delivered her Eulogy (so that everyone who couldn't be at his funeral, last year, could hear it) and Anthony battled his overwhelming fear of public speaking, to say a few words about his wonderful father.

The video tribute was quite long (20 minutes) and, although I felt badly to make everyone sit through such a long tribute, we poured over those pictures and took care to select the best songs and I really felt as though it told a beautiful story of his life, through those images. I made sure to speak before the video, because I couldn't trust that I would be able to do so, afterwards.
We welcomed everyone to come back to our home, after the service, as I really felt that Sal would have liked nothing better!

There were many things that were done in tribute to Sal, throughout the day, that most folks would never have known, but the kids and I knew were there. One of those things, was that I made sure to keep all of the vases and containers that everyone sent to Sal, both while he was fighting his fight and after he passed away, and I used them all at the house, in some capacity, so that the love was represented. Many of those came from the wonderfully supportive world of Alan Tani!

There are no words to express to you all how very grateful and blessed Alyssa, Anthony and I are to have your continued love and support. I truly hope that some folks can come to Pennsylvania, to visit us, be in Sal's mancave for a bit, and have something to eat at his favorite place...the dinner table!
Wishing you all a peaceful autumn filled with joy!

Love,
Cathy & family

Cathy,
You and the kids were everything I'd hope my family would be in the tough time that you've gone through.
Sleep well knowing you did your husband proud in life and beyond.  We will be here for you and the family, so don't be a stranger and whatever you do keep Sal's mancave just as you have, untouched.  You can certainly still feel a presence down there.  \
I will visit again soon, and look forward to spending more time together.
Thank you again for making me/us a part of the tribute.
Warm regards,
Dom

Well, I am so full of gratitude and I am so touched after seeing the tribute to Sal's memory at the Missing Man Table. I haven't been able to check in on the site, for a few weeks now, as my mother hasn't been doing well and I am caring for her most of the time that I am not at work.

Thank you so much for posting those videos as they mean so much to me! I will share them with Alyssa and Anthony, too! Sal would be so honored to be remembered by such a group of fine men.

I really hope that anyone who ever comes anywhere near the Philadelphia area will contact me and stop by!

I was asked, by one member, to share the video that I had created for Sal's Memorial. I have to apologize as there are LOTS of pictures of me and the kids with Sal, but of course after 35 years of a magical marriage and 2 wonderful, loving children, there are bound to be many pictures! It was hard for me to limit it to these few hundred! Anyway, I will attach the link, just in case anyone wants to see Sal's life in pictures. I hope the link works. I have never tried this before.

If you do watch, don't forget to put the volume on high, as each song was chosen carefully.  The first song (that is used again for the last song) is a song by his favorite group of tenors. I have a quick, funny story to share about that song and the group... So, shortly after Sal was diagnosed, I read that this group of 4 tenors were going to perform a holiday concert in Atlantic City (which is just about 90 minutes drive for us). I was so excited and I gave Sal the tickets as an early Christmas gift (the concert was in mid-December). When I presented the tickets to him, he was really grateful but I could tell that he was also a little confused. He then said to me, "who are they"? That's when I realized that I didn't do my homework and, although these guys were 4 tenors with an Italian-sounding group name, Il Divo, they were NOT the tenors that Sal liked or even knew! How funny! We both love live music and so, of course, we went to the concert and it was wonderful. Then, just a few months later, the real group that he actually liked, came to a different venue in Atlantic City and we went to the show. We heard that wonderful song and then, believe it or not, the pandemic hit just a few weeks later and that would be the last place that Sal and I ever went to, before we started staying home. The second song is our wedding song and then the kids chose their songs, for pictures with their loving father. The song that Alyssa chose is a woman paying tribute to her father. Very fitting. I just cry and cry the whole time I watch it!

I wish you all a very happy Autumn and I keep you all in my prayers, always. Thank you, again, for providing love and support to Sal's family! We really appreciate it!

Cathy, I watched that whole video.  It was truly a celebration of a happy life.  Typical of Italian and many other cultures. life evolves around family.  Well, I watched it and smiled during the photos of you and the family and family members I have not met.  I was okay until the final seconds of the video with Sal waving goodbye.  Then I lost it.  Thanks for sharing that video with us.  Sal my you rest in peace.  Dominick

I can't remember which one of you Aussie's said it but it fits here.  "It could bring a tear to a glass eye."

PS-  Cathy, you really are something special.

Thank you all, so much, for your kind words about the video. I know it was quite long, but I really wanted to show all the sides of my wonderful husband, in pictures.

Dominick, I thought it was interesting that you said the same exact thing, as my sister-in-law when she saw the video. She said that she held it together until that last shot of him driving the boat and waving goodbye. I wanted to tell you that I took that video in early August 2019. Just one month before Sal was diagnosed. We never went on the boat, just the two of us. Never! We always took one (or both) of the kids, or Sal took them, or we took my father and/or brother (who both loved to go out on the water), or Sal took his brother or buddy or whoever else might want to come along. But, on that day, just him and I went to get the boat and, unfortunately, we found that it wouldn't start. Sal was determined to get out on the water and so he told me to wait for a bit while he ran to get a part that he needed, replaced the part, and had the boat running in no time. Typical Sal! We did a little fishing and a little crabbing, that day, but it was more about being on the water and enjoying each other's company. I did not know it be my last time on the boat but at least I have the wonderful memory of a day on the bay, with my very best friend!

Wishing you all a lovely autumn weekend and sending you all my best!

Was finishing up a Penn 720 this morning —-

Forgot how the dog spring was oriented —-

Went to the Googles for help —-

Number one pops up the Alan Tani Site with a link to one of Sal's tutorials with photos.  There was a disclaimer in one of the photos by Sal —- "here is how to get the Dog Spring in the proper orientation —- it will drive you crazy unless you get it right —- and it is impossible to figure out without a photo or having done one before".

This is why tutorials with archived photos are so important to our site, our members, and the general angling public.

8 minutes later the reel was reassembled, tested, bagged, and ready to ship out.  This, after ruining the first A/R spring —- and replacing it with a new one from the parts department.

Thanks to my Brother, Sal.

Best, Fred

Me too.
I've heard this song by John Lennon many times as a kid. My older brother had Beatle-Mainia and bought all their albums. Heard it the other day and thought of several departed people I know including Sal.

Amazing stuff from a Guy that was only 25 when he wrote it.

IN MY LIFE

There are places I remember, all my life, though some have changed
Some forever, not for better, some have gone and some remain...

All these places have their moments, with Lovers and Friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living, in my life I've loved them all...

...Though I know I'll never lose affection, for people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them, in my life, I've loved them all...

I edited out alota stuff out 'cause it's actually a love song ("but in my life, I've loved you more..."———maybe his wife at the time?) one my all-time Beatle favorites.

10 or so years ago Sal sent me a YTS kit for free because I mentioned I wanted to build one for a panguero friend in Baja.  That YTS was a big deal to Joaquin and has since caught many thousands of yellowtail and tuna (single ar dog, sorry Sal) . I am quite grateful  I had the chance to know the bit of Sal he shared with me, his patience, his knowledge, his generosity, his wisdom.  Thank you Sal.
