we can talk about gear later.  please do not buy anything.  not even so much as a single hook.  i'd like to get you to have at least one trip under your belt before you start spending money.  hint: you'll probably see the need for all minimum $500 reels and $500 rods once we're done.  sorry......   ;D

ok, you can buy fluoro.  alan chui has good stuff.  otherwise get seaguar blue label in 30, 40 and 50 pound, 25 yard coils.  you can also get a small pack of ringed owner flyliners in #1, 2/0 and 4/0.  that's well under $100.  that's all, no more!!!!   ;D

i like the all glow flat falls, though the silver metallic stripe and glow will work also.  i want to make sure you are rigged up with the big hooks.

It all depends on what's biting. We could travel 300 miles south, fish a red hot bite for a few hours, then turn right around and head home.

A few years ago on the SoA, the trip before mine did what I mentioned above. I think it was a 5-Day and they ran all the way to The Ridge, fished for half a day, filled close to their limits, then turned around and went home. You never know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I chartered the SOA for 20 years strait several years ago. I in fact asked Mike that exact question one time on my charter. I sort of put it like this, "in a normal year how far from port would you travel on our 3 day if you had to?" Mike said about 170 from port would be in that time frame.

Now let me say this, we went to the Lupe twice on that 3 dayer in the 20 years I had it. Was it the norm as a choice? Heck no, but we did it. At the island at around 10 am, anchor around 11 am and headed back to home close to sunset. Not a lot of fishing time but on my charter we really didn't have another option at the time.

Several years we went to the dumper or the 60 mile bank which is way closer to the point, so like what was said it depends where the fish that you want to catch are. The long runs were mostly in the albacore days and my charter opted to chase BFT if any were around. In the over warm El Nino years where all the bait left and none where around were the years we ran to Guadalupe Island for YFT.

I got back from an 8 day today. The BFT are within easy range of the overnight fleet. There were small skiffs out there too. Fish were from 15 miles west of Todos Santos up to west of Rosarito. I didn't work that hard for them and still got 3 with the best being 128# that came on a 300gm flat fall at 1:30am, landed at 1:40 and I was in bed 10 minutes later! The other 2 were 25 and 30# and came during the day on a sinker rig and fly line and I gave them away. I also gave away 12 out the 17 YT I caught down on the Thetis bank.  Go getum!

We are back. Had a great time caught some quality bluefin. I caught my personal best fish that taped out at 110 lbs.  I will post pictures later as I just left Fisherman's Processing.  I dropped off 190 lbs of  whole fish for 4 fish.weather was warm and overcast with a stiff breeze blowing the whole time. Wind swells and chop kept us on our toes the whole time. Day one produced some fish on flyline during the sundown bite. The night drops produced nada It was hard keeping the dropper loop or flat falls vertical, even with 1 lbs of lead. Day 2 was mostly productive on the kite, with a cow coming over the rail.  Day three was pretty slow during the day, but the sundown bite really turn it on with lots of schoolies coming over the rail.

If I remember right 3 people limited out. By the time the evening bite came around after dinner, we tried deep dropping but between the wind and the speed of the schools nothing happened. Evan the new owner/operator really worked his butt off to find us fish and his hard work paid off. Wayne was busting his butt during the trip and finally scored 4 fish on the last day, even breaking a hook losing a quality fish 20 minutes into the fight.  He kept hard charging and brought 4 over the rail.   Alan and the boys are on their way home as I am also.   More to come as everyone gets home.   Bill

Edit to correct the darm autocorrect.

Jackpot fish taped out to 99lb. Caught on an old school cal star 6455xh mated to a Shimano tld30II tib frame conversion. This rig used to belong to my buddy Rob, who passed away a few years ago from complications from surgery. He was only 47. sinker rig (12 oz) 85 yards of 80 mono that's all what's left of a 200 yard topshot. spectra backing. 6 feet of 130 fluro leader (yo-zuri) tied with a three turn surgeons knot. 5/0 owner super mutu circle hook crimped with a rub sleeve and burned ball on tag end. It wasn't until halfway through the third and final day that I filled out my limit. Jimmy says you have to use strategy and leave room if you're lucky enough to come up on the kite rotation, or big fish show up. Don't fill your limit with all small fish. Once caught and tagged, fish count towards your 6 fish maximum limit regardless of trip length. 2 per day, 6 maximum per trip. Great trip, mostly uncrowded except the "corner" at times. We had our chances. Thats all you can ask for.

Nice job everyone!  Great to see good fish and Bill really putting it to them!  Here is a photo of them on the Bluefin grounds with the Coronado Islands for a backdrop. - john

Nice!  You were probably the only one fishing Cousins on the boat!  I had Phenix, UC, Seeker, Okuma and Black Hole rods and Avet, Okuma, Shimano, Penn and Daiwa reels on my trip.
