Alan, about the 80vsw, having hard time opening the drag cover using the drag cover wrench that comes with the reels, saw in MysticParts.com that they use to sell 168-70VS Drag Cover Wrench, do you know where I may order one that would fit my 80VSW?

Hey Kamu:  Isn't it funny how many times over the years a new part just does not act right.  After going crazy checking out everything but the new part we conclude the new part was just not quite right.  Head scratching.  Dominick

Aloha Kamu, Alan & gang.... I have an International 70 Big Game Special, a model which i can't find listed at PennParts. Judging from the serial # C000452, I gather it's an early model 70VS.

Aside from some minor corrosion and a missing clicker assembly (the nut and washer from which had fallen off inside & jammed up the cam assembly) the reels in really good shape. But I have 2 issues I need help with.

First, the darn drag cover is really stuck on there good. The indents for the silly Penn tool are useless and unless a buddy of mine comes up with his 5" channel lock pliers, I may have to cut off the cover. I think Alan once told me not to worry, discard the cover and keep the drag chamber open, just like Avet does!....only grease the washer  ;) ..just as Avet doesn't do ???

Can I please get a consensus this is kosher for this reel, or do I need to order up a new cover?

Secondly, I can't figure out how to pull the main gear. There is no cir clip on the shaft like the newer models I'm familiar with.

And I've tried removing the 3 screws on the low gear, but the thing seems to be held in place by the return spring and it won't come off
(http://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q680/fijigreen69/SANY0083_zps5036d0b5.jpg)

So, I give up.....what's the trick to pull that gear out??

And BTW Alan... Can you tell I finally figured out how to post pics !!   ;D   VICTORY !!

Cheers!
Erik

look down the drive shaft.  there is a spring and then a screw.  use a flat head screwdriver to back it out.

in the very center of the gear, you can see the end of the screw.  once it comes apart, you will see a big c-clip that will allow you to remove the drive shaft.

nice photos!

if that doesnt work insert a screw driver into the center of the shaft like you are shifting gears put pressure on the screw driver and pull the gears and shaft as one unit. on newer models there is a c clip under the chrome shaft cover. on the drag cover the lock pin tab needs to be lifted if not then you need to cut the cover off. i would replace the cover just for peace of mind.

Thanks for the feedback Alan & Kamu.
I'm still stumped though.. took me awhile to find the screw inside the gear stud (driveshaft), there is a spacer & a spring that comes out first, exposing the shift plunger inside which is slotted for a screwdriver. but the little bugger won't come loose. I've even slipped the handle arm back over the drive shaft for extra leverage ( because the whole gear assembly wants to turn with it ) and it still won't budge.
I've filled the shaft up with WD40 and will come back to that after it soaks for awhile, then let you know how it goes.
Kamu, the schematic shows a c-clip in between the two gears, but I haven't gotten to it yet. ???

Meanwhile, I had to cut the drag cover off. You'll be able to see why in the pics below

It was fully encrusted inside. someone serviced this reel before, but obviously gave up trying to get the drag cover off back then.

drag washers shot... delaminated and all... PennParts has both HT100 and Dura drag plates available for this reel.  :-\

I'd be stoked to hear anyone's 2 cents on the different drags but I'll probably go for the HT100's cause it'll save 20 bucks.

This early model didn't have the lock tabs for the cover, even though they are shown on the schematic... it only threaded down like a TLD does
(http://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q680/fijigreen69/SANY0171_zps5ac05767.jpg)

a quick trip to the ultrasonic cleaner later.. the threads look to be shot, so Kamu, I'm really tempted to leave it open from here on out.
A new drag cover is only $6, so what the heck, i may give it a go.

Probably a dumb question, but why can I not see all these photobucket pics? I mean is it something wrong at my end? All I see is this... here, and on many other threads  ???

Photobucket stopped being free.
They wanted to Charge $400 to keep an individual's pictures hosted.
Nobody is going to pay that.
I have rebuilt all mine, that I can find so far, but it is a time consuming process.
Nothing is wrong on your end.

Oops! 400 bucks is a lot of money and I do not see anybody paying that. I bet photobucket has decided to go out of business pretty soon! Thank you for taking the time and explaining.
