A store quoted me $45 for a new side plate that includes a clicker and $50 more to install it. Is that a good deal? Do I need a new side plate? Can I fix this for less or on my own?
uggh! remember my saying that some things in business can be taken care of with a letter, somethings need a phone call, and some things have to be done face to face? well, this is one of those things where a video would be very helpful.
so follow me on this. the click tongue is worn but looks ok. it's just the spring that is loose. what you have to do is grab with spring with a pair of flat nosed pliers or channel locks and bend in one side of the spring. the whole assembly will be cockeyed. then you have to bend the other side of the spring to even it out. now the spring has more pressure against the tongue. you can't have too much or too little. and ends of the spring have to be even and not too high or too low. if you got "the touch," the entire proceedure takes 10 seconds.
to get this right, the spring ends of the spring have to be in the proper place relative to the click tongue AND they have to have the proper amount of pressure. so the only question is, "do you feel lucky?" alan
it you look at the left side of the spring, you can see how it is bent. it's almost as though someone went in and tried to fix it and did not get it bent properly. also look carefully at the clicker tongue. the tongue show wear on both sides but mostly on the outgoing side. whoever had this reel left the clicker on all the time.
I studied the "situation" for about a minute and made a 2 second adjustment with pliers and saved myself $100.00 :cheers
