The tail plate bearing cup seems to be the first thing to go, as far as the plating. I believe the bearing was not plated as well as the other parts, but that's just my opinion.

This may, indeed, be true, but that part is also the most prominent and most prone to frictional wear, so it could be a double-whammy for that plating....
