I'm trying to figure out the Pro Gear numbering system...if there is one.
For example, here's the 541 Classic and the 540 Albacore Special,
different reels with very close numbering.  Then there's the 461 Wahoo Special and the 441 Classic, again very different. Is there a system to this, like the Newel system or what?

???

Yeah, they're a real headache. With some of the models the higher the numbers, the smaller the reel..... :-\  Go figure.

Does anyone know what a Pro Gear Pacifica 2500 would be equivalent to in a Penn or Newell reel?
Thanks, Brendan.

The old system is somewhat as follows as far as I can tell based on what is in the reels:

XYZ

X - 2 - 2/0 size
     5 - 3/0 size
     4 - 4/0 size
Y - 4 - 4/0 Drags or Gear
5 - Jigmaster  Drags or Gear
     5 - Larger Drags
Z - 1 - Wide
     0/5 - Regular width
     4 - Narrow

Penn Jigmaster.  It's essentially identical to PG251 except provided with graphite sideplates.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

Brendan

Thanks Bryan. I have never seen the ones with graphite side plates. What would be the maximum drag setting for this reel?
Brendan.

Hey Brendan,

Attach is a pick of the 2500.  Max drag is probably around 12# before the spool flexes and starts rubbing on the frame.  May seem low as I've seen guys with Jigmasters crank them down without binding.  But remember, the tolerances are a lot tighter where spectra should not get between the frame and the spool unlike the jigmasters.

I have not received the reel yet, but after looking at your chart I think I bought a wide thinking it was a narrow. I thought 501 was a take off on the Penn equivalent.

While on the subject of the Pro Gear numbering system, does anyone know the difference between a CS500 and a CS501? Same question about CS550 and CS551. Thanks
David

Brendan, I'm sorry I missed this.  What did you buy?  Based on the chart, what are you looking for?  The CS501 is a narrow reel, but it's not a take off of a Penn.  Max drag is 15# on this reel or you may strip the gears (as I'm told by Alan).  What reel are you looking for based on the numbering?

The CS500 is identical to CS501 except the edges are rounding and the frames are polished.  Likewise with the CS550 and CS551.

Bryan, I bought a CS 501. Spool width is about 1 1/4", outside diameter of the reel is 2 7/16". It is actually a bit smaller than I thought it was going to be. I put about 320 Yards of 50 LB. Power Pro and plan on short top shot of 30 to 50 Fluorocarbon. The handle side plate edge is square and the clicker side is eased. I think the gear ratio is 6-1. Its my first Pro Gear reel, my only worry is how small the side plate screws are. Other than that It looks very well built. Brendan.

That's an excellent reel.  One of Alan and my favorite reel.  I wouldn't worry about the size of the side plate screws, it's plenty strong for the forces on the reel.  It's an easy reel to re-lube bearings without taking the whole reel apart.  quick takedown.  Enjoy and share the fish that you've caught with it.

On the other note, it sounds like you were looking for a PG255 or PG251.  Penn swapable internals, similar in size with the CS501 and CS551, respectively.  PG255 are scarce, but the PG251 are available once and a while via ebay or other fishing forums.

Just completed a quick breakdown and service after about six months of fishing. I'm very impressed with everything about the reel. The only thing I caught this time that I missed with my first service was the nylon washer under the main gear. I just replaced with Carbontex. I own many reels and they have been getting a lot less use. I almost think anything heavier should be a two speed.

I've had this sent to me in an email a couple of years back.  Not sure where it came from...must have been an ad from somewhere.

I sent that list out.  I still have those reels except for the 251 but my 255 has a spare spool plus an extra 251 frame and spool so I kinda still have a 251 if I want one.
