Hey all, what the difference between the two. Looks like the 540 is a bit wider then the 545?  545 more like a yts? and are they both 3/0 penn size with 4/0 guts?
I've only seen one around here and they're hard to come by on the east coast!
Thanks in advance,  ..  Lou

wish i would have kept better track of these.  yeah, it's basically the width.
send me an email at alantani@yahoo.com for questions!

Here's a link from awhile back...should help.

I don't have the albacore special series but I've had the 255/545/454 classics since they came out. The 545 is comparable to a 3/0 size, the 454 a 4/0 yts and the 255 is like a small jigmaster size.

The 255 has jigmaster size drags; the 545 has 4/0 size drags and the 454 has 4/0 size drags. They're a simple 2 bearing design that works well. The newer albacore series has multiple bearings and an ARB I believe.

Thanks Alan and Tunacious. A couple of weeks ago I passed up a 545 at one of the tackle shows. The price was right but no clicker and for my trolling it just doesn't work. No one seemed to be looking at it as few are familiar with that reel on the east coast. Anyways my buddy bought it and brought it over for service. Nice reel and well made, hardly required a thing to be done to it. I messed up!!
Oh well, how many reels is TOO MANY anyways?

A 545 is basically a smaller tricked out 4/0. A 540 Albacore Special is much beefier!

I provided the spec's above and still have the 255/251,501,545,280,540,540L.

Here are some photos to give you all perspective of some of these ProGear reels.

The 255 is like an Accurate Magnum Squidder.  Size wise, is about the same as a Newell 220.

The 545 is like an Accurate Magnum 501/506.  Size wise is equivalent to a 300 series Newell.

The 454 or Yellowtail special is about the same size as a narrow 113H.

I don't have an 540 Albacore Special to share for comparision, but it think the size is in between an 545 and the 454 with similar spool width.

The 280 Albacore special is in between the the 255 and 545 with similar width spool.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

Thanks Bryan! With only seeing the 545 and really none others around here its tough to get and idea of the size when you see one forsale online. Looks to be quality with simplicity! How can you beat that?

And each of these use penn guts.

The 255/251 uses jigmaster guts.

They 545 and 454 uses 4/0 113h guts.
