side plate bearing damage in lever drags

Hi Alan
I have always thought that if the right side plate bearing in a lever drag reel was replaced with a greased bushing, then the reel could better cope with high drag settings.
Is this a feasable idea?

From what I've seen thrust and side load on radial bearings not designed for side loads is the problem. Retrofitting a flanged angular contact bearing would help but my machinist is now living in another country.

Angular contact bearing would be great possibility. My investigation came up with 0 bearings in the sizes we would need. You may be able to get a little better durability agaist high drag settings by going to a carbon steel bearing which can take higher axial loads than SS.
