We've had success here in the UK, fishing for garfish (similar to the needlefish), by using white knitting wool, soaked in pilchard oil. This is fished from a "washing-line" rig, similar to the one below

The casual attitude of the Solomon Islander toward the species is quite a contrast from my last encounter with them fishing live bait off Tobago in the Caribbean.

There if one did hook up the guide would shout in a broad Caribbean accent-'Cut De Line'!!!!  Shocked
