Pulling a bearing off a spool shaft??????

Hi Alan:

I bought a Penn Fathom 25LW on e bay, and I Pulled the right plate and greased the drags with Cals Drag grease and butted it up.
I went into the left plate to pull the spool and service the bearings and I can't get the shaft bearing off the shaft, I broke my little steel bearing puller I made trying to get it off. What do you suggest I use to get that stubborn bearing off the spool shaft.

side note- this reel was new and unused, as far as I could tell, and when I opened it up I was surprised how well the inside was covered in blue grease, good Job Penn I've never seen that before. Alan I think your influence is having an impact.

   If you have another bearing just crush the stuck one with vise grips then twist it off the shaft.
you could heat it to try to loosen it

If you look at the schematic. There is a spool shaft pin on one side and a c clip on the other.
This might have something to do with it. Just a Guess.

Maybe 2 seperate screwdrivers on opposite sides prying up with bent tips*.

*to get in there if necessary.

Also a little heat with a torch on the bearing, and penetrating oil might help break it loose.

There doesn't look to be any corrosion or similar in play that would cause the bearing to stick - maybe just really tight tolerances?

Personally I'd be inclined to dissasemble the other end of the spool shaft to the point that I could remove the entire spool shaft, then clamp the shaft loosely in a soft-jaw vice with the bearing sitting on the jaws, then put a block of wood on the shaft and give it some loving with a hammer. The bearing mightn't be very happy when you're finished but if it's in a state where it gets stuck perhaps it is time to replace it anyway.
If that doesn't move it, first penetrating oil then either heat on the bearing or cold on the shaft. Odd that it would be stuck on a relatively new-looking and not obviously corroded reel though.

If you pry on the outer race it will probably ruin the bearing for distance casting purposes.  With the inner race stuck, prying on the outer race will put enough pressure on the balls and cages to warp everything.  When you obsess about bearing free spin you start to realize how fragile they are.  Just because a bearing is strong enough to fight a big fish does not mean it will cast well.

Thank you all very much for the great Ideas and options. boon: I find it strange the the bearing is stuck as well, new with no corrosion of any kind. It makes me think that the bearing is adhered to the spool shaft by design and it's not meant to come off? oc1: I'm trying to get better free spool for casting and I am obsess about it a little bit, but it mostly for fun and I'm trying to follow what I've learned from Alan and this board, servicing a reel before you use it the first time is the best time to do it.
ps: this is also what the inside of the left plate looked like when I open it up, I was surprised to see it so well lubed.

That bearing is definitely supposed to come off. Where they are part of the spool, Penn shows them that way on the schematics and doesn't include a part number for the bearing. This one has a part number and shows it off the spool.

We haven't run into this one, but you have several points of attack already posted. I think would have tried the two screw drivers method and worked it gently...after a good lubricating oil applied and let to sit for a bit.

Thank you mizmo67, I have given this one up and decided, the bearing is new, and it works, I put some Speed X on it and closed it up. I fight this one another day.
I have a Fathom 15LW new in the box, I'm about to pull it apart and service the drags, I see if the shaft bearing is stuck on that one as well.

Looking at the print the shaft has to be removed to remove the bearing.

The bearing does come off. It's just a little tight on your reel. I've taken them off to open them up using 2 screwdrivers with someone holding the spool. When it pops it will fly

Update:  I pulled the spool off a new Fathom 15LW and when I removed the Spool shaft pin, the bearing came off the shaft with very little effort. I'm going to go back into the 25LW and try each and every one of your suggestions until I can get the thing off.

I had to remove one that was totally rusted shut from a Daiwa Saltist spool. Carefully using a vise, 2 screwdrivers, and some oil it popped off into never land.
