Apparently power and communications are out in several areas.

I just got back on Friday.
While there's no 'good' time for an earthquake, this one (7.5 magnitude in the most recent reports) hit at midnight so, despite lots of damage to roads, rail lines, infrastructure etc, casualties have been mercifully low at this stage.
The capital, Wellington, is effectively closed this morning as safety checks are made around the CBD.
It was felt across most of the country and aftershocks up to six magnitude are coming at about one per minute at present.
Once again, the 'Shaky Isles' earn the nickname.
Best wishes to anyone caught up in it.

7.5 Big rattle down here early this morning, was hard to stand up during part of it. We have just had another small one as I type this. Thanks for your concern, there are parts of the country that have been hit really bad. 2 people have died, fortunately my wife and I are fine and no major damage to our house
