not sure what he's talking about, but the 20T uses a 117DN-30 drag plate.  http://www.mysticparts.com/Assets/images/pennparts/schematics/20t.pdf  the plain 20 uses that floating drag washer that looks like car brake.  here's the schematic http://www.mysticparts.com/Assets/images/pennparts/schematics/20.pdf and here is the drag plate  https://www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/Parts/6A-30.aspx  this should take care of it.  and welcome!!!!!!

I think he proposed that in order to save some money, one can glue a cf drag to the pressure plate instead of replacing with the new dura drag component.  This would work, but I favor mounting the 3rd gen CF disc (if you can find one) with 4 screws, over gluing anything.  If this part can't be located, his approach would save a few bucks.

A write up with photos would be nice to see.

Welcome!

Thanks Guys , as I mentioned on my post it's a Pre T model 1982 .  Penn just called and said to get a 118 0934 HT 100 Drag washer and a 118 1003 Metal Drag for under $40.00 .  Will these work ok ? This is the OLDER  pre 85 I-20 again .  so What's the best Washer to use and I dont Know what a " CF " is ?   Also what type of Glue do You guys use to glue drags on ~ Epoxy ?   " 3rd gen CF disc (if you can find one) with 4 screws " ? In other words it's a Pre T AND Pre - 1985 , just a 1 speed globe on bar 20 .

If the reel has origionsl parts, and has nit been upgraded, you can convert to carbon fiber drag buy simply buying the 6A-30 washer, for $22.90+shipping from Mystic...

https://www.mysticparts.com/6A-30.aspx

This will utilize your existing drive plate, and would be mounted with the 4 screws already on your plate.

You may want to consider upgrading the plate to the 117-30 plate...

https://www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/Parts/117-30.aspx

Which is $30 as well if you want to reduce handle back play from 90deg to 30deg.

An alternative would be to buy the new part that has both the drag washer and plate together, 117-70VS...

https://www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/Parts/117DN-70VS.aspx

For $52.95, but you may have comparability issues with this plate and your existing pinion/spool shaft requiring a new pinion as well...

https://www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/Parts/117DN-30.aspx

At around $30 for the pinion this route may cost over $80, so option 1 is best.

Just get a 6a-30, mount it to the existing drive plate, and try it out.  If you can find a 117-30 drive plate (no longer available from Penn or Mystic), you may consider upgrading as well then you have the best of both worlds.

Hope that makes sense?

John

Once you get that cooling shield off (they are a bit tricky...use 2 opposing thin pieces of metal to work the flange out, if you can't get it with your hand), you can see if you even need any drag upgrade.  Looks to me like you got a reel with the 3rd gen carbon fiber drag already.  If so, just work the weave up with a clean cloth, clean it with brake cleaner, grease with Cal's drag grease/wipe clean, and reinstall (after cleaning/packing all your bearings), and changing Bellevilles (if needed).

This should really be a separate topic under the Penn International Tutorials section...

Hello. Sorry for sideway profile pic. Don't know how to change it and I figure I'm a bit sideways myself so it's fitting. I'm from up in the great white north of Manitoba Canada. Fished with my father when I was a kid. Had other things on my mind as a teen and young adult.  ;). About 5 years ago got back into fishing and havnt  looked back. Was on a Mexico trip with expensive plastic spinner getting all banged up and decided to look at quality vintage instead.  I have a 440 and a super being shipped as we speak. I thought I will give these a try and if I like will probably fill my arsenal with other sizes. Looking forward to reading all tips on these reels and will be looking for help along the way. Great site.  Thanks. John

John,
Glad to have you! Sounds like you have a couple nice reels on the way....whatever you get, someone here will probably be able to help..lots of knowledge here(not me), but enjoy the ride!

I realize this is probably not the correct place to post this, but I have tried elsewhere on the site, specifically the Abu section, with no luck.
First off, thanks to Alan for establishing this site; it is a great resource, with so much incredible information.
Second, I would like to thank in advance any members who provide answers to my questions and any other information now or in the future.
That said, my first question is: what is the difference between the old Abu Blue Yonder (not the newer model with the black side plates) and the Abu 6500 C3 CT Elite (with the blue chromed side plates)?
I look forward to hearing back those in the know.
Dave
