From what I have seen over the years the M ended with the early G series with P parts. After that we had the 3.6 and 5 speed. I had a NIB P344 M and sold it to a HI buddy with a 5 speed gear swap.

F normally designates Fast or 5:1 gear ratio if my memory serves me correctly.

I think J is for jigging and designates 4:1 gear ratio.

The M is the 4:1.

The J just has a bar on top.

Bar on top???

Was the 322 made with 4.1?

Yes there was a 322M made with 4.1 and I have a gear set from one.

So why was the 4.1 gear set made? In what scenario would this gear set be used for?

I'm honored to have you respond to my thread. I've read you are the Newell god!

MarkT

Why 4:1? How about Newells were basically hot-rodded Jigmasters and Jigmasters had 4:1 gears?
When I was your age Pluto was a planet!

When Jerry Downie gets back he is the best source since he worked at Newell. Newell started by modifying Penn reels and eventually designed their own reels.

And deep down, they're still Penns ;D
Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Did the P series 322's come with two different length handles? A short and long?

The early Ps had a shorter handle and the second generation had a longer handle.
