That is exactly how I would do it John, but Everybody does things differently.
Evidently, these guys fish off the pier and someone on the water kayaks their baits way out.
They are sold on using braid, I guess its different when you are that high up off the water.
It would prevent some of the cut offs associated with being on the sand.

 Agree. My rationale was more physical....if I couldn't get done in 1200 yards, it just wasn't meant to be for me, lol.   I do not want to reel in 2000 yds with a fish on it...

I appreciate everyone's input, but I think after a little research. A GT knot will be the strongest and still pass through the guides.
If he was using hollow core as backing, it would be different.

PR will probably go through the guides better with very heavy mono and is considered slightly stronger. Same principle though, no double in the mono.

GT knot

also called FG Sebile and FS knot. only used this, before switching to L2L, on mono lines 30-60lb...
