Hey guys,
So this last weekend I was fishing from the shore and casted out my 4/0, when the line was coming off the reel, the free spool stopped working, and the reel would retrieve line in retrieve mode and in free spool. I took apart the reel later at home and cant figure out why the free spool isnt working. I am thinking maybe a problem with the Pinion gear. There is a small ring that fits around the Pinion and I am not sure if it is supposed to move freely or be stuck onto the pinion. Any suggestions of how to fix the reel, or what might be wrong would be appreciated, thank you.

Any pics of that opened reel?
Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

alantani

the ring is supposed to stay fixed on the pinion gear.  could the pinion gear be stuck to the spool shaft?

The spool shaft could be getting stuck, but even when the spool is not in, the free spool on the reel still wont work.

Is the Eccentric Jack moving up & down when you move the Anti-Reverse Lever ?

It's the "slingshot-shaped" piece in this pic . . .

I'm thinking a possible Yoke or Eccentric Jack issue, in addition to the Pinion Gear ring coming off . . .

The Yoke is the Brass "Cross-Bar", holding the Pinion Gear in position in this pic . . .

Is the pinion gear supposed to lock when put into free spool? Or should it be moving freely?

MarkT

It should move freely in free spool.  Those square shoulders you can see in the pinion go over the matching square shoulders on the spool.  They lock together.  When in free spool the pinion is lifted away from the spool and they disengage.

I think the problem is that when I put the reel into freespool, the pinion is lifting up, but is still engaged with the larger main gear. Not really sure how to fix this so I hope someone can help.

alantani

there are tabs on the eccentric jack that lift the yoke and pinion gear up and away from the shoulders of the spool shaft and disengage the pinion from the spool shaft shoulders.  you can try to bend the tabs on the eccentric jack "up" a little so that the yoke and pinion gear move more.

I agree, the tabs need to be tuned. This is a tricky deal, if you lift them to much then the pinion will have to much room to move around when the reel is in gear (not in "free spool mode",) You cen tell that is happening if the reel is rough to turn when you are trying to retrieve line. When you get it just right, everything works. Being able to do this is one of the differences between being a guy that slaps grease on reel parts and being someone who can service a reel. Hand out here and we'll get you to be the latter.

The yoke is flat when sat on a flat surface? The arms shouldn't be bent. The eccentric should be flat too. If they're good then the tabs on the eccentric may need adjustment as stated above.

How would you move the tabs on the eccentric jack? I tried a few things but coulnt seems to make any movement in them. It seems the only problem is the pinion not moving down far enough to actually freespool

MarkT

Bend them with a scratch awl/ice pick type "thing" or a small screwdriver.

It's possible that your Eccentric Jack is simply "worn out" . . .

NOTE : There are TWO DIFFERENT styles of eccentric jacks . . .

I prefer the 2nd type ( 2nd & 3rd Pics ), rather that the "single support" style ( 1st Pic ) . . .

To be safe, I would replace BOTH the Yoke & Eccentric Jack . . . Fortunately, they are CHEAP ( Less than $3.00 total + shipping )  STAINLESS STEEL ones are available for $14.40 + shipping !

The pinion doesn't disengage with the main gear, period! The only thing the clutch does is free up the spoolshaft engaging the pinion, the gears stay meshed all the time. Once you understand this, I think all of your questions will be answered.
