They called some of the 4s, and all of the 6s & 7s Salt Water Proof but they really aren't, same as the Dams & bigger Shakespears. They have SS parts but they're not totally sealed and the salt is really tough on the body & spool finish. I think they were pretty good for their day but not so much by today's standards. I generally try to shy away from any that have white remnants or come from coastal areas. You never know how well they were maintained. I got duped once & figured never again so I'm really careful. 
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)

I believe the drag washer material on the Shakespeare "Royal Maroons" was leather.
