hi Alan-
just returned from 16 day trip and was unable to use 2 penn 30s reels due to "skipping" while reeling in. I helped a friend buy these a few years back from Hi's and were used just 1x. any suggestions?

Sounds like the 2 speed mechanism might need to be cleaned up and examined. Too much grease/dirt might mess up the functionality, or spacing for proper gear alignment/engagement may be slightly amiss.  It should be disassembled/tested/cleaned, and problem shot IMHO.
