I use Vessel, Whia, and other American made screwdrivers when working on fishing reels.  Sometimes I am confused with which screwdriver to use.  So I first test fit the screwdriver and make sure that it fits the head well and does not have any play.  I am particularly careful when using it to loosen a screw.

I have also used some 99cents store /Harbor Freight Chinese made screwdrivers successfully. They are cheap and usually have a magnetized tip.  I think they follow JIS so they fit Japanese reels very well.  This is not a high torque application so durability is second to fit in my opinion.  Worth a try!

I`ve learned that with reels and fine things there is a danger of over tightening, shredding, breaking the screws - housings - and str. So I use smaller ones than what would generally be adequate.
Or those with just a part of handle, with broken handle at some point.
And if someone could explain how is it that screwdrivers with same size  tip, but longer shaft, are stronger when tightening - unscrewing ?!
Edit: I know why. With longer shaft you get more leverage, by shaft twisting and thus providing torque.
Luck is when good preparation meets opportunity.

I have both Hozan and Vessel; both are good quality, but the softer grips on Vessel are more comfortable to use and the tips are treated in some way (maybe nitrided).

I bought the same set on Amazon for $18 after reading this thread, since my Daiwa screw heads cam out on the Phillips.  These bits say they are JIS and I confirmed the ones I have at least are as labeled such, but how much "wobble" room (15 degrees, 20 degrees, etc.) should one expect when moving the tool inside the screw head back and forth without actually moving the screws shaft?  Just talking finger pressure.

Thanks

Matt

Matt I often use a flat head on those combination screws. The JIS just doesn't fit them properly. The JIS fits great on other eastern reels like Shimano

well, I went ahead for my first JIS screwdriver set.

I havent shredded too many Philips head screws but its time to have a more organized tool box anyway, I have too many sizes and brands mixed that I feel like losing time trying one and another looking for a better fit on the screw head

I checked the Were site. Black appears to be Pozi, red is Phillips

if you look carefully its to quickly identify different types of fitting such as phillips, pozi and torx or hexagon etc
