Sal, what you've done is nothing less than a benefit to others while being an over all asset to this place... Jeff

Sal, the asbestos may not be bad, but I agree with what you've done to this reel. If you can improve it why not. Your washers look phenomenal. So much so, I would consider sending and paying you to do some of my quick spools up like yours. Awesome job on an awesome reel.

Took a couple of days off for my birthday and decided to take this reel you see above.
It was a pleasure to use, not much of a fish, but it was over 30".

This was my first time using the 3000 and I must say, I was impressed with its performance.
Caught a bunch of these, some even a little larger and the reel didn' t Skip a best.
I love the way it casts also, much better than the 650ss , I had both with me.

Those are excellent reels, Sal —

Especially when you work your upgrades on them!

Good catching — you deserve the time to fish...

Happy Birthday, BTW.

Check out a 3001 — there are a couple of interesting differences.

Best,

Happy Birthday Sal! I agree about these reels...fantastic. I only have the 1000 but have been prowling for others. Could you tell me what line you spooled 'er up with? I'm thinking of trying that beach fishing and it will probably with a reel like that. 8)

Sal!

Question of the day...  why did the DQ3000 cast better than your Penn 650SS???

Do I need to be on the look out for either a DQ3000 or 3001???

In Baja, I have no issues with the 650SS.

Inquiring minds want to know,

And Happy Birthday Buddy Boy!!!!

Never let the skinny guys make the sandwiches!!  NEVER!!!!

Happy birthday Sal, good to see you take a break from work and field test your drag improvements.

Mike
It can't be too difficult - a lot of people do it.

Looking good Paisano.  I see you still can cast a 6 ounce weight (at least it looks like 6 ounces).  Though at your age you should go a little slower, maybe 4 ounces.   ;D  BTW Happy Birthday.  I'll be in New Jersey Sunday and Monday but I won't have time to go up to Penn.  Dominick
Leave the gun.  Take the cannolis.

There are two things I don't like about fishing.  Getting up early in the morning and boats.  The rest of it is fun.

Hello Mo, I had the 650ss and the 3000 loaded with 20 lb mono.
The 3000 went almost all the way down with every cast, but that reel hold about50 yards less than the 650ss.
It was still enough for my style of casting.
As you know, I love my penn ss reels and have nothing bad to say about them, but the 3000 was also smoother when retrieving the fish.
Definitely grab one!...thank you Mo.

Thank you Wayne.

Not sure, maybe the lip of the spool, or the smaller diameter of the spool.
The reel did definitely cast better and I got more distance while using the same weight.
On the retrieval, I'm sure it was because of the worm gear.

Good eye Dominick!
4 oz wasn't holding so I increased it a bit.
So close and yet so far...too bad I won't get to see you.
Have a good trip!

normally, bigger spool diameter would give you better distance...
guessing your 3000 was better matched to the rod it was on, than the 650SS

You might be right, both 10' rods were identical, but the 3000 could have been a better match for that rod.
Went back again around 5:30 this morning, had to rest one rod, I couldn't keep up with the action.
Caught about a dozen dogfish, some close to 4', They get huge around here.

Tried different bait, but all I caught were these.

Fought a skate for 45 minutes, he would not budge.
I got to see him it was really close.
My arm was getting tired and I increased the drag a little.
I turned around and told my wife the line is going to pop and within seconds it did.
It appeared to be over 4', she was taping but had the cell on me😏.

gonna' keep guessing: the 650SS needs a bigger and/or taller stripper guide

curious if the Penn & DAM are canted differently (how much is the spool shaft off-parallel to the foot/rod)
even a fraction of a degree makes a difference for rod selection

I used spinnfisher rods from penn, designed to work with the 650, but the Dam 3000 did a little better.
I did not say the 650ss wasn't doing it, I felt as the Dam 3000 did it a little better.
Both are nice reels.

Went to flip over a Horseshoe crab, he was struggling, when I looked over this guy almost took my rod and reel

I didn't know I could run that fast  :), caught it just in time.
