I was given the opportunity to acquire a new 30VSW and was wondering what I need to do prior to use? Re-grease? What should I spool with?

I would probably suggest filling the reel with 200# hollow with 100# top shot. You could likely fill it with 130# or even 150# hollow braid but that will likely break the bank with the amount of line that the reel holds.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

I also recommend having the reel pre serviced. They are not greased very well.

WOW!  No kidding, I opened up the sideplates after talking to Bryan and just like you said...they are not greased very well at all! A dab of grease here and there and that was it. I took a brush to spread the grease all over the inners and also applied grease to the foot of the reel along with all screws.

I can't believe this is not done out of the factory!

Thank you Keith and Bryan for the recommendations! Now to find some line to spool up!

By the way, I am a bit disappointed that Penn didn't take their time putting a bit more grease. People pay good money for this and what does a bit more grease cost them? Thanks AT forum for once again educating me on how to properly take care of my reels! Invaluable forum with great people!

i'm pretty sure that a 30 wide will hold 700 yards of 130 pound jerry brown hollow and a 25 yard fluoro topshot.  even though the line capacity is the same as the 50, the drag range is not.  you are likely looking at 30 to 35 pounds at strike with 40-45 pounds at full with this reel, not the 45 pounds at strike that you would see with the penn 50 vsx.

Thanks Alan.  I thought the line capacity was greater.  Not to worry...Mr. Wilson has a it covered with a MAK50.   ;)

Thanks Alan and Bryan! I will go with 130 JB, not sure if I can find them in 700 yard spools, I know they have 600.

i have braid at a really good price.  the big plus is that i can spool it up with the proper amount of tension.  i also do the "stoplight" where the color changes every 100 yards.  it's alot of extra work, but it's the best way to rig it.

What type of braid Alan? Can you please message me?
