In the old days, as I recall —

Marketing departments would just round off the gear ratio numbers in many cases...

From the reality standpoint of selling reels — it made no difference to the consumer — and if ever called on the issue, the manufacturer would just state that they had rounded the numbers for the sake of simplicity and customer information.

As a matter of fact, this still goes on today with many manufacturers — simplest way to check/know actual ratios is to just make a mark on the spool — then count number of spool rotations per (1) crank rotation.

You are right, Sal — it makes no difference to the angler or the fish, although the German engineers likely needed to bite their lips!

OK...  my loathing of rotor cups goes beyond rationality
how does the 1001 compare?
any other tiny, overbuilt, skirted DAM's?
any metal spool options?

thanks

The Quick 1000 & 1001 both have metal aluminum skirted spools.

They are both extremely capable and tough reels.

Parts are difficult without an extra donor reel.

They are very small and well built.

you mean they're "too new" to be maintained by your world-class supply?  :'( :'( :'(
is the "next size up" more abundant?
it was this 1202 (esp. the over/under drag) that peaked my interest & spool appears graphite:

Basically, when the rumors became true about DAM discontinuing German production, and moving that manufacturing to Asia — coupled with the fact that in order to place your first order with DAM for these newer parts in the mid 90's, an initial order of $5000 was required.

I do not know of one dealer who ever did this — because there were no guarantees that the landscape would not change again, or the company go out of business, or be sold to another corporation.

DAM was weighing the possibilities and fears of going out of business —and they were of the school that if you threw enough crap against the wall — something might stick.

Hopeful survival — Like a drowning man clutching at anything that might float.

Production moved to Asia — dealers discontinued buying parts, and that was it for the quality DAM reels.

There were a few specialized ones like the MDS series — but that was very limited.

I just keep my NOS parts to help out AT members who apprecite these great reels, and others who may inquire from time to time.  If parts were available for these, I would not get so many requests from European countries for parts.

Just a little niche to help folks out as possible.

Most of the DAM's starting with the "02" series, had graphite spools.

I actually got outbid at the very end of the above auction. PS) It's not that I love my DAM reels and my DAM Quick International SR65 rod, I just happen to appreciate German Engineering... ;D
