Since Alan is always saying shrimp flies and whole squid catch the biggest fish I thought I'd tie up some dropper loop rigs to use on the upcoming trip. I plan on putting a swimbait or jig on the bottom and using a single dropper loop with a teaser above but I still have a few questions....

What # test mono should I use?

How far from the bottom should the first loop be?

How far from the main line should the loop be?

Probably get a lot of different answers  I use 40-50 3' up and 10" loop

alantani

we'll tie up a bunch when we get to the house.  no hurry for now.

PJ, I have the same questions, i built a jig out of scrap plywood and finishing nails so i could be consistent with the sizes of the loops and the distance between loops. There was another thread about it in the lure section that had video links, very informative.

But i will defer to Alan... ;D.  "Shrimp flies and whole squid"

alantani

we might have something a little different for you to try.   ;D

Dropper Loops are only rated at 80% of line strength.

I have not failed.  I just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

alantani

probably less, maybe 60%, the way i tie it.  that's why i use 50# mono to make shrimp fly leaders.  i also use a perfection loop, which is a 50% knot.  we get hung up on the rocks alot. so it's good to have the leader break rather than the main line.
