What's the time frame PJ?
1940's split bamboo double built or hickory (Tycoon, Montague)
1950's Trevano tobacco rod (pre-Garcia/Narmco Conolon, California Tackle Cal-Royal, Roddy) or a Harnell.
1960's tobacco, pigmented or painted phenolic resin (Harnell, Lamiglass, translucent Fenwick, pre-Penn Sabre) or a Wonderod
1970's epoxy impregnated fiberglass (plenty to choose from)
1980's graphite

It's a setup that will get fished so I'm thinking 70-80's

They still make the Lamiglas BT85 7S blank. It's been around for many years and has the classic slow action. Sometimes you can find the lakeland reel seats on ebay and combine that with hypalon grips and chrome wire guides and you are in business. The #49 would do that rod justice.
