This is a friends reel, and I had to turn the handle of course. It was making metallic sounds when turning,so I had to investigate, and I came across something I have never seen before. The spool is actually scraping against the rotor...has anyone here seen this before?

Bent rotor shaft or out of round rotor cup.

Probably the rotor cup.
Just takes dropping it once to knock the cup out of round.
There is nothing like lying flat on your back on the deck, alone except for the helmsman aft at the wheel, silence except for the lapping of the sea against the side of the ship. At that time you can be equal to Ulysses and brother to him.

Really, I would never have thought it could be bent that easily...so the fix is replacing the rotor,,or do we attempt to reshape somehow?

Search SOL site this was covered several years ago.

It is difficult, at best, but I have had some success tweaking a flat spot out of a rotor cup if it is not too pronounced. Slight taps with a padded (rubber or plastic) mallet, a little at a time, is the key.
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)
