This is a fantiastic little reel - a real pleasure to work on.
It's an early MX (updated after clarification from akfish) and is the first Avet I've worked on (they're still quite unique here in NZ).
Kiwi company 'Black Magic Tackle' co-branded a consignment of 'BMX' models.
The tolerances are fantastic and it's beautifully made.
Righto, let's launch into it. Off comes the locking plate, plate screws and acorn nut.
There's a washer above and an arm spacer below - both are likely to be stuck to the arm.
Unscrew the pre-set knob and remove the spring.
Despite being a good few years old, this reel had never been serviced and had an erroneous spring sitting inside the pre-set knob.
Off comes the lever arm. Separate the stainless knob from the lever arm and push through the bushing from the base of the arm.
The second (male) cam can now be removed from the spool shaft, along with the right side plate screws.
Remove the two inner screws and lift off the right side plate.
Slide the drive shaft from the side plate and hook the inside bearing out.
Flip the side plate over and remove the outer bearing and sleeve.
Remove the brake disc and lift the spool from the frame.
Slide out the spool shaft assembly and separate the bellevilles, pusher buhing, spool bearing and spool tube, as well as the (smaller) right side spool bearing, spring washer and spool spring.
The covers, dogs and springs can now be removed from the side plate.
These are a great design and really well made.
Once everything's been checked for wear etc and cleaned thoroughly, it's time to start reassembly.
Start with the spool shaft, leaving out the right side components (small bearing, spring washers and spring).
Insert from the left and fit the remaining components.
Remove the brake bearing. Now it's time to refit the dog, springs and covers, and replace the inside drive shaft bearing.
Here's how the reel is branded for the NZ market...
Pop out the brake disc retaining ring and grease both the carbon fiber brake disc and the spool beneath.
Replace the retaining spring and be sure to bed the ring in properly.
Two bearing we're toast and resisted all attempts to salvage, so were replaced.
I've painted a littel Cal's insude the bearing cup to protect the bearing from salt exposure (from residue runing down the spool shaft).
Insert the bearing and lube with a drop or ReelX or similar.
Replace the drag plate and insert the pinion gear and greased brake bearing.
Insert the inner drive shaft bearing, followed by the drive shaft, then flip the side plate over and slide the spacer tube and second drive shaft bearing onto the drive shaft.
Fit the arm spacer on the drive shaft above the bearing.
On goes the crank arm and washer.
Fit the acorn nut and slide the right side plate back over the spool shaft.
Tighten down the five body screws and replace the cam (ie the 'male cam'), beneath the lever arm.
The second (female) cam is in the underside of the lever arm, with the lever arm bushing fitted from the outside.
Once the assembly's in place, finish it all off with the spring and pre-set knob.
