Here is a long range rod for deep jigging heavy jigs (16 - 20oz). I had a few choices of blanks and we narrowed it down to the St.Croix 2M86XHF to be cut to 8'-0" or the MHX MU108XXH to be cut. The MHX is considerably stiffer and the owner chose to go that way. I did the hypalon grips, Fuji heavy duty seat and Fugi SIN guides. Made my cut from the top and bottom then fitted with a #14 top. If I used EVA grips it would be like holding on to air. I'm hoping he finds a nice Atlantic Cod to break the ice on this.

Nice work, I'm sure he'll be pleased. Like the long rear section of the grip for jigging, fits nicely under the arm pit.

Most of this type of jigging rods are set up with at least a 16" rear grip and 10" front grip. If I'm doing one for someone well over 6' tall I try to do a 18 - 20" rear grip. It makes it so much easier to have your arms apart and work the jig slow. Big problem finding the hypalon now. Used to be back in the old days we'd get 12 foot lengths of raw hypalon in different inside diameters and go from there. Life used to be so simple.

Same for me, I'll get shorter sections now and use 2 then turn it in the lathe, you can see the joint but you have to look for it. Hopefully a supplier will pick up the slack,it's always something.
Still haven't found a thread I like as well as gudebrod, have you found a good one yet? I'm ok on most colors except black. What are you using these days?

For most rods I've been using Prowrap NCP. The main problem I have with it is if I use a bobbin I'll get fuzzies on the thread. A real pain as I like to use the bobbin while inlaying trim threads in the underwrap. Fishawk and Fuji are both excellent in both NCP and Nylon. If I'm doing a closed wrap I'll fall back on the Madeira Polyneon. The color is so vivid but it is only for decorative stuff as it has very little strength. Yup, I miss the Gudebrod and the National thread. Too bad we're on the opposite sides of the country, it would be nice to get together and shoot the bull ;)

Can't get long hypalon? Maybe that's why split grips gave become so popular.
