Alan I have a set of 5.1 gears I bought several years ago. I tried to use them in several reels without success. They make excessive gear noise like the gear teeth are not meshing properly. I have them installed in my 112h at the moment I am building and they wine like the teeth are just about to skip. I don't have the reversing dog installed yet because it hasn't arrived yet. When I turn the handle in reverse the gears grind like the gears are not cut right. Have you had this problem before.

Ok I found the information I needed. These gears dont work in the penn 112h. Also they dont work in my squider magnum. Well I ordered gears that will work.  So I have a set of gears that can only be used in a limited number of reels.

To be honest I haven't had success with any of the ss Jigmaster gears. I have the regular and hex gears and they are very rough.

I have a set of Newells in a 501 and Pro Gear in a 112H and have had no problems. I have talked to a lot of people that have had problems so I guess I'm just lucky.

I use the pro challenger gears, some are a little rough sounding at first but they break in and it goes away. Haven't tried them in a 112H yet. Planning on trying some on the narrow frame and taking my first adventure down double dog lane. I thought they would fit, it was the 500 DD bridge that wouldn't fit. Hmmm.
Do what you can with that you have where you are

The first gen. 5:1 gear set was for JigMaster 500/501 only. Then, the second gen (current model) will work in any 112H and JigMaster 500/501. Gen 1 was discontinued (has not been selling it for about 2.5 years) for awhile. So far, I have not heard any issue on the second gen 112H/JigMaster 500/501 reels.

As for Keith, if you had the issue, you should have told me about it long time ago. It seems that none of my item really work for you, and I guess you will not be buying my product anymore. I am really sorry about that. Other than you, I had couple members had a problem with the first gen JM gear sets, but we were able to resolve the issue and had their reels working the way they should be. Seriously, if you have any issue, please bring it to my attention, and I will take care of it. Without seeing the gear set problem that you had, I really do not know how to work it out with you. I can guarantee that the current model of 4.8:1 gear set will work in 112H and JigMaster 500/501.

If any other has any issue, please let me know ASAP. I can't address it after 2 or 3 years.

Will do Alan.

I built 3 of the Cortez Jigmasters in 3 different sizes. I used your HEX gear set. They were rough so I sent the reels to Sal. My shop stays busy with customers.

Sal went through the reels for me so I know they would be right. The gears are just rough. Now these reels haven't been fished at all and sit pretty up on a shelf.

Alan what should I do. Should I catch some fish with them this coming Red Snapper sesason and see if they smooth out?

Sincerely,

Keith

I am not going to tell you what to do with your reels. You do what is the best for you.
If you just want to put your reels on the shelve, you don't really need any components inside. Just make outside look good and you are done.

Please note that the reason these gear sets are rough at first because I used 416 stainless steel and heat treated. It will smooth out. I was going to use 316 SS, but few members insisted to use 416 SS HT.

A lot of people have been using that JM500X gear set, and they bring fishes in without any problem.

The gear set are the first gen gears. They have been sitting around because of these issues. They just are not usable and it has been awhile. Its something that people should know not to buy the first gen if someone has a  set for sale.

The first gen will not work in any 112H or any other reels except JM 500/501 with the gear sleeve.

Would just like to add here.

Alan C is a stand-up guy, and will help you if you are having issues. You need to take the time to get in contact with him as discuss your problem, and you will get a solution. I too had issues with a set of Gen 1 5:1 gears. That was in bakelite plated 501, the gears skipped the first time I tried use it on water, and the main gear teeth got shredded. I sent Alan some pictures of the problem, and 2 weeks later I have a set of Gen 2 4.8:1's sent, all the way to Australia no less. These have been fine ever since. I actually bought 2 sets of the Gen 1 5:1's, the second set of Gen 1's resides in my Cortez Plated Jigmaster, which has already had a fair working over, and there has been no issues.
Yes these gears are noisy and rough straight out of the box, but they do wear in. I "bed" mine with some fine lapping paste when first installing. This may not be for everyone, as it means you have to completely remove the gears after the bedding the gears in under drag load, and thoroughly clean them again, and the surrounding parts, and then do a thorough pre-service again. This quietens them down quite quickly. And they will get better, with use!
Customising a reel isn't always just about plug and play. The guys who provide aftermarket parts to us go out of their way to try and make it this way, but it doesn't always happen quite like that. The problems can usually be overcome by the individual with a few skills up their sleeve. Otherwise there are plenty of people on this forum, who are willing to help, if you take the time to make contact. Also take the time to research the vast amount of information that is on this site, you will find the solution is probably already documented here somewhere. Customising a reel is the path less traveled, and its not always an easy one. The joy comes from the satisfaction of overcoming the difficulties, to end up with the perfect reel for you.

Now if Australia Post will just admit they "lost" the last package Alan sent to me, I could get on with other projects.....but I digress..... ::)

I have two of the JM500x sets.  One in a Cortez Classic 500 and one in a Bakelite Plate 112xn.  Both worked well out of the box and have quieted down during the spoiling process.  I did have a eBay set shred in my 112h though.

I've been scolded here for saying I don't like noisy rough gears. I love Alan's products...use them all the time...the SS Jigmaster gears just aren't my cup of tea. How about making a softer smoother gear for lighter duty? Not everyone needs 25lbs. of drag from a Jiggy. Maybe make a gear to max out at say 17lbs. Maybe that 316 steel Alan wanted to use might be perfect for some folks. Just food for thought...so I hope no one tells me to find a different place to hang out again. 8)

I have been using the JM 500X gears and they are smooth. It was the first Gen that I have trouble with.
