I have also used the "Jerry Brown" method for years when winding braid onto the spool with 100% positive results. No tape and a long tag with some wraps over it.

Scott
what is the "Jerry Brown" method of spooling braid.

I couldn't find JB's website but fortunately it was still on Basil's.

In the past I have backed up braid with either Dacron or mono but in anticipation of trying jigging for tuna this month I just spooled up a Saragosa 10k with 55# Dendoh and since they sent me an 1800m yds spool instead of a 300m I figured I'd forgo the backing.

I read Basil's article about using carnuba wax. I have some block carnuba that was used for finishing wood, it's charged on a 3/4" wide buffing wheel which was perfect to fit inside the spool and buff the spool's insides and arbor, giving them a nice coat of wax. This carnuba is very tacky, so much so that it would hold the tag end of the jam knot I used while spooling. I had no problem with the braid grabbing the arbor and it protects the spool.
My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.
