So I told my buddy he could try vinegar to get rid of some corrosion. Maybe I wasn't clear about it when I told him because now I have 2 fin nor reels that are in pieces in 1 gal zip locks. Apparently he placed all the pieces in vinegar and left them for weeks maybe months. They look like corroded battery terminals. Any ideas on easy cleaning? Or should I even bother?

this is one of the few times that an ultrasonic cleaner would really help.  short answer, though.  body bag and a decent burial.

Funny you should say that. I actually have an ultrasonic cleaner. What do you suggest I use in it for said job?

Without a photo, West —

My solution would be to buy two more new reels, do a pre-fish service with proper greases, do a spray & wipe with WD-40 — charge him what the reels cost you — and just toss the vinegar marinaded reels. 😁😁

Then move on to the rest of your bench — and everyone is happy and he is impressed with your skill.

Or, tell him the truth — and let him buy his own reels.

Or try the US cleaner with a little simple green — but methinks since the reels were left in the vinegar that long — an acid effect has already taken permanent effect on parts and pieces.

Just what I might do...maybe not anyone else.  Best to move on...

hand dishwashing detergent works well.  just don't use machine dishwashing detergent.  that will further destroy the anodizing.

Baking soda but it's sounds like it's to late. It works on battery terminals.

I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes. I've got a Captiva to take care of first.

The real cure is to extremely careful with advice.  Guys will only ever hear part of what you say then likely blame you later on.  What's that old saying?  $20 an hour labor, $60 an hour if you touched it first!
