Asbestos is more effective dry, Andy.

However, if you could substitute a very thin, lightly greased CF — that would be superior for smoothness at any drag range.

I have a couple of 1000's for personal use — and one is missing the opposite side crank cap also.

If I can't find one somewhere? — I will likely look around for a cap that might fit.  Maybe in a hobby store where they sell small parts — hardware store — drug store — or one of the folks on our site.

The caps for the 265's are slightly too large.

If you ever find an extra, send one my way — I would appreciate it!

If I find something that fits and looks good and secure — I will send it to you.

Glad you watched Alan Hawk's breakdown and evaluation of the 5001— he doesn't miss much.  And like our Alan — I trust his judgement, experience, and research 110%

Best,

Fred

Agreed both Alan's are extremely knowledgeable, I enjoy Alan Hawk's break downs and articles over reels very thorough to say the least.

Yeah I tried a 265 cap as well and found they were too large as well. I'll keep my eyes peeled for something, I imagine original dam ones are probably like finding a needle in a hay stack. We have some caps here at work for capping off ends of lines to keep debris out of them when we have them disconnected to work on something maybe one of the smaller ones might work I'll have to see. I really need to go through my 1000 and 1001 they will be great reels for fishing. The 1001 came with an extra reel that is missing the bail and line roller I've been on the fence about trying to find a bail for it so it could be used or just leaving it be as a parts reel.

I agree Fred, greasing asbestos gives the same effect as greasing old asbestos brake shoes. No stoppy Kemosabe...HA! I get the best performance from asbestos by keeping it dry while smoothing and cleaning the metal washers. The least little imperfection and asbestos will chatter. It can be made to work pretty darn good, but greased carbon fiber is so much more forgiving. 8)

I had trouble finding a handle hole cap for an old Berkley.  Even went to Fastenal to see what they had & came home empty.  It is a screw in type.  Ended up using one of those "Christmas Tree" fasteners that are used to hold plastic fender shields on cars.  Found one where the cap was small enough to cover the hole, yet the "tree" part was big enough to fit in the hole and stay.  Of course, it can be removed if need be.
