I,m redoing a couple of halibut boat rods and need some options before ordering the parts.
How do you folks like the foregrip in Eva?   I've always used hypalon.  It is durable butt gets slippery woith fish oil, n baiting often .   I other wise like it.
The Eva on friends rods is a little bit spongy butt these were old rods. Just wondering what people think 🤔.   Thanks for sharing your thoughts..🐟

EPDM much better than EVA. Replaces hypalon very well. Softer, much grippier when wet, goes back to orignal shape after compressed. It wont retain dents or pressure marks like EVA does. it also sands to shape very well.  Great durable stuff for handles.

Here I'm bending & playing around with some. Far softer & pliable than EVA.

Most of my rods are made for jigging on party boats. The 1st thing one does when they get tired or have a decent fish on is lays the rod on the rail. Eva will tear within minutes. Hypalon will last considerably longer but eventually will wear out. Hypalon is a bit heavier but it will push on a large diameter blank pretty easy. Saying that I wouldn't recommend trying to push a 1/2" diameter grip on a 7/8 or larger blank. In theory it can be done but I'm not going to try it. Either grip you use make sure to epoxy the inside of the grip and the blank all the way down to where it's supposed to go. The epoxy makes it a little easier to push and for me I never use the 5 minute stuff.
If you really want something to last for years of abuse try the 3M cold shrink tubing. Wicked expensive but I have that as the rear grip on my jigging rod that spends a lot of time on the rail. Sorry if I got carried away but I'm bored at the moment. On the East coast of Florida and the boats got blown out and it's too windy in the inter-coastal. Oh well, guess I'll go home tomorrow.

Some days the supply of available curse words is insufficient to meet my demands.

That cold shrink is very durable but adds weight. The EPDM is a good replacement for hypalon & far better stuff than EVA.  When sliding grip material down a blank I coat the blank with epoxy where the grip will go. Above this where the grip comes to rest sliding down the blank  I use rubber cement. The rubber cement helps a lot when sliding grip material into place. Other thing it rubs off the blank after it dries.

Making for very easy clean up... Jeff

Never liked the feel of EVA and still have a dwindling stash of hypalon. Next trip to get supplies I'll get some EPDM,sounds like good stuff.
I switched to rubber cement for grips a few years ago and found it to be so much easier than epoxy. Glides right on and easy clean up. I wouldn't use it unless the fit is really snug.I like to wrap the hypalon in a damp towel and put it in the microwave and get it hot, much it much more plyable.
Do what you can with that you have where you are

Thanks for the comments,  Heating the grip material especially does allow it to streatch fit on easier of its snug cold.  I use a hair dryer out in the hobby room.  its handy for other epoxy stuff too..   I will get a going.
