It used to work with the US made gears, not sure about the current Chinese made stuff because Penn has made changes to the internals.

Even if you have a set of US made gears, it is not a direct drop in replacement.  You will have to modify the Newell bridge sleeve so the first metal drag washer (that is keyed to the sleeve) can travel further down the sleeve.  The no-machining work-around is to add a 4th HT-100 carbon fiber washer to the stack closest to the main gear, you still have a 3-stack drag, its just that the first carbon fiber washer is doubled up and twice the thickness.

Lastly, because of the loose fit of most Penn parts, the tolerences of the individual parts might not work in your Newell. I had 2 sets of Accurate 5:1 replacement gears for the Penn jigmaster that the gear teeth skipped when under a moderate drag in 2 different Jigmasters.  If you try the modification, go slow, test your reel, and don't get hurt if the gear teeth does slip.
