Hi Guys: Post 1 and it is a question so apologies

First up let me say I am in awe of this site. I am relatively new to fishing (Having been bitten by the bug while sharing the experience with my son who was 3 or so. Father and son activities FTW)
I live in Wellington New Zealand and mainly Rock fish with a little Surfcasting. This means while we have much by way of coastline we don't have the same sized retail industry here.
I will be taking the reel described below to the local store where there is a Guy I know who is pretty diligent and experienced. I certainly trust him to either fix the reel or say he cannot and advise me to go to a more specialist person if the case warrants it (W/O breaking it further...
My Issue:

Recently I bought the Quantum second hand.
It was an OK deal and I still am in contact with the chap who sold it. I knew the risks of a second hand piece of Kit and at the price I got it at it was worth the risk (Caveat Emptor etc) Aside from the below issue I love this reel.

However I have noticed an issue that I will be addressing sooner rather than later with the reel (taking it to the local tackle store)

The issue is: When I retrieve the line with or without a fish and am winding furiously, the spool slips.
Not completely but periodically. It seems like the reel winds winds, winds then slips as if to gain back a mesh in the gearing/reseat itself then wind, wind, wind.
The noise it makes as it does this however isn't an explicitly "groinching" sound of teeth on teeth but almost a mutes squeak/rubbing noise of flat surfaces not purchasing against each other correctly. Like a washer or something else.
Forgive my explanation as this is just starting to happen and I am work remembering this from two nights ago.
I guess that without seeing the reel, any suggestions here that this post may elicit will be speculation only but what I am after is exactly that.
I have the schematic to look at (found here) if that is helpful.

Bottom line is I would like to be able to fix this myself one day (No, Not yet. The padawan knows his limitations) But by putting this question in front of an assembly of diligent and experience people that I understand this community is I may better understand the mechanics of reels.
This will also give an indication of how much or little this may end up costing. Having that son sure dented my disposable income!!

Cheers for the time you have spent reading this, Genuinely appreciate it.

Welcome to the site jaypeegee. Quite a lot of your fellow countrymen on here already. ;D
If you are using braid check that it is not slipping on the spool.

welcome!  it sounds almost like the pinion gear is suddenly disengaging from the spool shaft.  that sometimes happens when the spool is not properly centered on certain model reels.  the boca pt should only have a "right side" adjustment.  check to see if there is a shim (or even a whole bearing) missing from the left.  a large amount of play in the spool will be your first clue.  alan

@ Irish Jigger: No have 20lb mono on it. But Thank you, However the Reel its-self is stopping (SLipping) movement then starting again. Were it Line slipping wouldnt I see different symptons?
@ Alan Tani: OK back to the schematics I go.

Not sure what constitutes a large amount of play in the reel, But will check whjen I return home. I presume you mean slop back to fron side to side? Pls confirm if possible.
The reel feels very solid and stable and has much less flex and play than my 6500b. It feels as thouggh it is made to a higher tolerance/spec. (I know there are inherent differences due to materials used)
The comparison is to draw attention to it not feeling like it about to break in all other concerns/regards

Many thanks

too much play is anything more than a few thousanths of an inch.
