Alan, sorry for this dumb question, but I cannot find the Abu hot rod thread and have several 5500's that I want to upgrade. Can you give me a link to the thread?

not sure. basically, it's carbontex drag washers and grease on the inside. clean the bearings and levelwind parts, then dip in tsi 301. i did a quick check, but the search engine with this software is not the best.

If I may: Open the schematics for the Record 50 or 60, the Mag-X C5, and make note of the part numbers for the bb idler gear from the record, the worm and shroud from the C5, and install these, and a ceramic pawl. After that, Alan's input above is as good as it gets.
If your 55 is current, it will already have carbontex drag washers inside. If not, Dawn from Smoothdrag carries them, or use the pn's from the Record. Same as a regular 4-5-6 round Abu.
