.... was narrowly averted. my kid is flunking her senior year of school.  from straight A's in her freshman and sophmore year, to B's and C's in her junior year, to D's and C's this year.  remember that econ paper that my daughter had due?  well, we finished it.  jeez, what a week.  i get some stomach flu wednesday, then come home to find out that my 12th grader has an econ paper due on friday.  in between trips to the bathroom, we actually got it finished.  major props go to justin.  the draft he send (from half way across the world!) was brilliant.  allison highlighted all the parts she wanted to incorporate.  i did the footwork to find the appropriate references and a few bits of hard data to fill in the gaps, then we put it into the same format as the rubric that was required by the instructor.  a bunch of kids didn't get it done, so i think we are in good shape.  it might actually raise her grade from a C to a B.

allison was not completely happy with the paper, but i though it was pretty good, considering that we were up all night last night.

on a side note, i just finished my taxes.  um, from 2010 !!!!!!!!!!  joy had all these employee stock purchases from years ago and i could not figure out how to input them.  turbotax had a form, but the 1099-B tax form i had did not completely match.  for the last year, i have been trying to get morgan stanley to cough up enough data for me and they kept sending me the same garbage.  finally, i was organizing my 2011 papers, and i found the forms i needed.  i put in all the data and i am now getting $9k back from the feds and $7k back from the state.  my 2011 taxes should be similar.  looks like my wife gets that new car she's been bugging me about.

all of this, and a dozen other things, have been weighing heavy on my mind for the last 4 months.  i see some light at the end of the tunnel.  justin, you are a lifesaver.  jonathan, jim, roger and bryan.  thanks for helping out with the reels.  to all the mods, thanks for keeping an eye on the shop.  i am so far behind with stuff right now that i could spend 6 months in the garage and around the house and still not catch up.  the one thing that is going well is this place.  and for that, i thank you all.

now, to get some parts shipped out and get some reels finished.  oh, did i mention that they were catching salmon?

Hang in there with the kid, the school thing has a way of working it self out.  My son was never much of a student in high school, these days there seems to be more of the peer pressure to NOT do well in school.... once he got into a junior college, he started doing much better. By the way, he almost went to West Valley which is in your neck of the woods, but the football coach told him he was too small to play quarterback, so he went to Chabot instead.

Sorry to hear of the issues with your daughter....she's at an age where a lot of kids go off-the-rails...so to speak, some for good, some just for a little while. Don't sweat the small stuff...as long as she's still fundamentally a good kid, she'll be fine.
Take care of your family, get caught up with the government, and don't give this place a thought. You've created a place that has matured to the point that we'll be able to go along just fine for a while on our own.
Thanks Alan.

thanks A lot Alan for all the hard work you put in, I received the parts I ordered and as always very nice. I have three young boys and cannot even imaging all of the home work that will need to get done, my kindergartner brings home all kinds of work already, I can’t believe how much a kindergartner has to learn already, when I was in school  we still took naps, not any more. So hang in there and she will be fine. And go caught a salmon for me .

I know what you mean Alan.  I just finished my 2010 taxes myself.  It always seems as though when we get caught up on one thing, something else gets behind.  Hang in there.  I think this is why I got into fishing in the first place.  It's the only time that I can clear my head of all of the normal life chaos that goes on.

College is so totally different from high school. I loved it. It's worth the grind just so that you have the options available.

I graduated from high school with a 1.8 GPA, and that was getting several A's my senior year.  You can't do that in Florida anymore. Now you've got to have a 2.0

I had the test scores, but had a lot of points deducted since I was usually at the beach. My American History class for example: 97 test average, D in the class. They were going to give me an F, but that was before my dad pointed that if you could ace the class without showing up, maybe the teacher needed to be replaced. They gave me the D in order to keep him from taking it up with the county. I also stopped skipping school from then on.

After high school I worked for years, then went to college. By the time I finished veterinary school, I was 41. Now I'm 56, and my youngest child is about to turn 5.

I wasted a lot of time, and made my life a LOT harder.
