Wallace, I see a nice reel and a great job of the assembly, but, could you give a little narration? I know you're an excellent writer.

ok lets start(thks bryan)
middle pic before and after,tsi301+wd-40
reel has no grease in it at all.
after jims suggestion i cleaned it all up with wd40.
then lubed everything with tsi301,no grease.(my idea)
no different 5secs free spool.reel is smooth as.
6lb drag,as recommended max.20lb line mono or braid.
1st pic is cleaned parts in order.assembly has been covered before.(close enough,to get by on)
3rd pic is very interesting.
1. schematics.
2.60 page booklet,in 7 languages.knots,how to set up,cast,etc;etc;
3. instructional manual.
4.12month warranty and every abu agent in all the countries around the world!
usa,asia,europe,uk,mozamBEAK.pacific,its all there.
5.family history.
6.plastic bag,wrench,oil,brake weights.
7 spare spool,bushes+bearings,cork drag washer(been replaced)
ive never seen this before, anybody else would probably add $200.
in the manual it said this reel is not designed for lures or weights
under 20 grams or 3/4 ounce.maybe thats why i cant get 30secs freespool.
otherwise reel is perfect.i paid $179aud 8years ago or thereabouts.

For many of these reels, free spool isn't a measure of time, but a measure of how many times the line winder goes back and forth.  You should be able to get at least 2 -3 back and forth.

Could it be possible that the lever drag system decelerates ?

Can the reel be assembled without drag plate(s) (I mean those carbontex, cork or whatever)?

hi gulf
nope the reel wont work.
the cork washer is .263 thick.
when i put single cf washer (1mm) in to replace the cork
the gear and pinion dont mesh.it skips like the gears are stripped.
so added another cf washer,it works fine,(5secs f/spool) but reduced drag.(3lb)
added a shim,6lb drag,(3secs f/spl)
the reel still casts perfectly with a bit of weight.
in the other spare spool i glued a cf to the cork
and sanded it down to.26.glued to spool same 5secs.works fine.
cheers,im missing something.

Ah... I just replied to this on the other thread.. Here; to save the extra hopping around..

"These reels have little in common with other ambassadeurs, and differ from other lever drag reels as well.

They have little or no freespool at all, by reason of design. It is the nature of the beast.

Adding lubricants or cleaning this-or-that will help nothing.

The lack of freespool is caused primarily by the drag seperating spring acting directly upon the brass or bronze bushing in the spool.

So, to begin with, these bushings could be replaced with ball bearings (odd size, if irc). One might want to ascertain that the spring abuts the inner race of the bearing very closely as well.

Then the reel suffers from the common affliction of axial pressure acting upon the very small ball bearings, which prompts the desire for a spool bearing sleeve. This also of a rather specific size.

THEN things may begin to behave normally, and allow the usual progression of fine tuning."

Now that i think about it, there may be something else i don't recall... Recently while digging through some old junk, i found a new shaft i started making for one of these reels. I don't remember why. On the other hand, i chose not to finish it. I don't remember why that either.

Hmm.

Well, fiddle with it and see.
