Ambassadeur 12 vs Ambassadeur 8500/8600 Striper - differences?

I'm about to score an old Ambassadeur 12 reel on a pretty good deal. When researching the reel it seems that it is basically the same reel as the 8500. In the US it was for a time sold under the name "8600 Striper".

When comparing schematics the only difference I can find is that the 12 has a clicker which the 8500 doesn't.

Am I right when presuming that this was just basically a name change from ABU's part when introducing their IGFA line of 12/20/30 reels in the mid 70's?

Cheers!

the ABU 12 is the same size as the ABU 9000  but only as the single  speed   the 9000 & 9000c are auto  two speed  reels

This is what I've found out so far

The ABU 12 was a beefed up model based on the design of the beautiful blue non-export  Ambassadeur 8500 (USA model  8600 Striper)
http://www.realsreels.com/reels/IGFA/default.htm

It weighs 510/520g (different sources)
Capacity of 350m of 0,45mm line

The Ambassadeur 9000 weighs in at 410g and holds 250m of 0,50mm line.

There is as you can see a significant weight difference between the 12 and the 9000. Maybe a heavier spool?

no sir the spool out of a ABU 12 is the same spool as the 9000   i know this as ive a few Abu 12 & ABU 9000c in my collection

Nice collection!  :o

But where, if the numbers are true, does the weight difference come from?

I see in the schematics that they have different part nr (9177 vs 4575) for the spool, they don't look interchangable...

I believe that the side plates on a 12 are made from a heavier metal (brass maybe.?), and on a 9000 they're aluminium, hence the weight difference.
