So I'm sure this has been covered, but I'm newbie, so here goes:
so I've got a 112H I got second (maybe 3rd or ...) hand. it has 5:1 gears in it, maker unknown, but at least 5 yrs or older. so I've read here where a 112H will shred the gears under high drag pressures. my question is this: can I fish this reel as is up to a certain drag setting, or would I be better off switching out to 4:1 gearset? I'd like to set the reel up to fish #40, with about 12 lb. drag. going to install stainless sleeve, maybe drag kit.  thanks for any help.

if they are stainless steel, then you likely have either accurate or newell gears.  under moderate drag settings, you will befine.  if they are brass main and stainless steel pinion penn gears, then someone had to do some serious grinding and drilling to get them to work.  i think you scored!
