Will the standard pinion and main gear in a Penn 113 Senator Black reel (Old Penn) handle 15 pounds of drag? I have 2 that I have up-graded with steel main gears sst gear sleeve. I have not been able to find 2 more steel main gears this is why I am asking this question. The 2 I rebuilt work great and I would like to complete the other 2 I have.

Unscientifically, I would say 12# max based on the reels that I had serviced.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

I would stay in the range of 12# as Bryan said. Now interestingly enough I camen across SS gears for the 113 that I want to test out, the gears look like they came from penn. Also, Sal did a gear change on these senators that brought the ratio up to 2.6:1 and could handle easy 15-20# of drag.

Just food for thought

The Jigmaster is rated at 15# max, straight from Penn's mouth., you should be ok with 15# with that reel.
The brass 5-66 is a stronger gear than Penn's brass 5-500 gear

Also, here is a pic of the Jigmaster's pinion:

And here is a pic of the 113 pinion:

An Acetal washer for under the gear, along with greased carbon fiber washers, should  help  keeping the reel smooth at max.

It would still be nice to grab steel gears when possible though.

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Hi folks, thanks for the replies and input. I have 2 of these reels operational up-graded and in use. I think I will just keep them (the other 2) and wait to get the steel main gears. I would have no problem going up to the Long Beach gear ratio. All I need at this time is the gears since I have all the other parts to get these 2 reels to the 15 pound darg rating.
Thanks for the replies and your skilled input.

I've tested steel 5-66 gears to 20# but it was not a long use test, 15 will be safe.  I wouldn't push a brass gear this high.

Hi Keta, thanks for the input!
The 5-66 on my schematic is the same main gear listed for the old 113 Black Senator, the pinion is a 13-113. The Penn 66 67 68 shows a 13-49 pinion. Ok now can I install the steel 5-66 main gear with the 13-113 pinion or should I use the 13-49 pinion? To get to the higher speed I would think I would use the 13-49 pinion.
Look for forward to your reply,

You can use the 13-49 pinion if you also use the 66/67/68 bridge. The pin for the sleeve is located a little closer to the spool spindle so the main gear can properly engage the smaller OD pinion.  You may find the star spacer rubbing in the hole in the sideplate.  A few minutes with a file or sandpaper will fix that.

If the OD and tooth pitch are the same the hobbed 13-49 will be a stronger gear.
