Brass spool shim

Noticed that the brass shim behind my spool bearing (6500 C3) is in bad shape (slightly bent). Just curious as to the purpose of this shim and what types of problems it could cause in the condition it is in....

that shim is curved from the factory. It seems to float the bearing.
